Hampton police officer shoots himself in the hand while training
HAMPTON – A Hampton police officer was training with his firearm when the gun went off and struck him in the hand.
According to police chief Robert Schaefer, on April 17th at approximately 8:00 PM, the Hampton Police Department was conducting a night handgun qualification. While on the firing line, one of the officers had a malfunction with their weapon. Firearms instructor and Hampton Police Officer, Al Brandt was attempting to clear the jam and the gun discharged, striking him in the hand.
Officer Brandt was transported to Franklin General Hospital for initial treatment and later to Mercy Hospital in Mason City where he underwent surgery. Officer Brandt is recovering at home. The incident is being investigated by the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office as part of standard procedure.
