MASON CITY – Cheapskate, stupid, or just plain evil?
Police said Thursday that a Mason City man was too cheap to pay a vet to humanely put his dog down, so instead, he grabbed a plastic bag and suffocated it.
Peter Joseph Olson, age 36, is accused of placing a plastic bag over a 5-year-old Sharpei’s head with the intent to asphyxiate it because he did not want to pay a vet to euthanize the animal, police told NIT. Olson then allegedly discarded the dead pet in a nearby dumpster.
Olson was arrested by Mason City police at his home at 637 South President Avenue Thursday afternoon and charged with one count of animal neglect. He is innocent until proven guilty.

@Anonymous-Legally I don’t know if he can be convicted on either charge. Although I don’t like what he did because there were other more humane options available, I am not sure what he did was against the law. I think neglect might be hard to prove and leaving emotion out of it I don’t think he abused the animal in the eyes of the law.

I have known Peter and his wife for a number of years, and I absolutley did not believe this when I read it, def not in their charactor. I will not defend what he did, because it’s horrific on every level.
What needs to be done, is #1, take every animal and child out of that house. No excuses. Animals and children should not be subjected to violence in the household.

They did have an animal in the house on 4/10 and when abuse was alleged the animal was retrieved by the rescue that adopted it to him and his wife. They also had a foster dog in the home from another rescue and on 4/11 that animal was retrieved. The five year old dog he killed was not due to lack of money – they had just recently adopted an animal and in fact on 4/9 they were looking to adopt 2 additional animals from yet another shelter. He admitted to killing 1 dog and 2 cats so far.
