DES MOINES – The University of Northern Iowa track and field team wrapped up competition today at the 38th Annual Jim Duncan Invitational, finishing the meet with 12 individual and three relay victories.
The Panthers got the day started in the field events, with Matt Schiffer picking up a win in the men’s discus. He set a new meet record and personal-best with his throw of 187-10, placing him third all-time at UNI. Chloe Schmidt followed suit, winning the women’s discus competition for the second time this season with a throw of 145-07.
Adam McDonnell came away with two wins on the day, winning the men’s javelin and the men’s hammer throw with distances of 199-05 and 188-11, respectively. Schiffer also placed third in the hammer throw with a new personal record of 180-05.
Jamie Lindstrom came away with a win in the women’s shot put with a toss of 46-02.25 with Sydney Rabon coming in second. Rabon also earned a first place finish in the women’s hammer throw competition, throwing for a distance of 166-08.
Libby Torresani took first in the women’s pole vault, followed by freshman Taylor Corkum in second. The men’s pole vault competition also saw two UNI competitors finish in the top-three with Corey Szamlewski placing second with a height of 15-11.
In the long jump pit, the Panthers finished with two second place finishes. Tatiana Rice came in second in the women’s competition with a season-best jump of 17-02.00 while Weston Riesselman finished with an outdoor personal-best jump of 24-02.25.
Brandon Carnes took home two wins today at the Jim Duncan Invite, winning both the men’s 100 and 200 meter dashes. In his first attempt at the 100 meter dash this season, the freshman ran a time of 10.77, followed by a time of 21.42 in the 200 meters. Christine MacNeill also finished second in the women’s 200 meters, grabbing a personal-best time of 24.88.
Sebastian Barth finished with his first 110 meter hurdle win of the season today, placing first with a time of 14.41 in the race. Ryan Newtoff and Holly Salzbrenner also had strong performances in the 400 meter hurdles, both finishing in third place with personal-best times.
Darian Samuelson won the women’s 400 meter dash, finishing with a time of 57.00. In the men’s race, the Panthers had four top-10 finishers, led by Jesse Davenport in third place with a time of 48.74.
UNI swept the top-three spots in the women’s 800 meters, with Amber Clock winning. Clock finished with a time of 2:11.84, followed by Alex Wilson with a time of 2:13.31. Theresa Connelly rounded out the Panthers competitors in third place with a time of 2:16.21.
In the first relay of the day, the Panther men picked up a win in the 4X100 meter relay. The team of Cam Brown, Brandon Carnes, Derek Kramer and Marshall Hill set a season-best time of 41.37.
To finish the day of competition, UNI won both the men’s and women’s 4X400 meter relays. The team of Maddie Beeler, Darian Samuelson, Alisha Jones and Christine MacNeill set a season-best time of 3:46.66. The men’s team of Newtoff, Marshall Hill, Davenport and Jordan Guske also set a new season-best time of 3:14.29 to finish with the win.
The UNI track and field team will return to action Saturday, April 19 when they head to Edwardsville, Ill. for the Gateway Twilight Classic.
