WASHINGTON, D.C. – Senator Tom Harkin (D-IA) today issued the following statement upon learning that Iowa Congressman Dave Loebsack was chosen last night by his fellow members of the House Education and Workforce Committee to serve as Ranking Member, the senior most Democrat, on the Subcommittee on Early Childhood, Elementary and Secondary Education. The subcommittee has jurisdiction over elementary and secondary education initiatives. In the U.S. Senate, Harkin chairs the Health, Education, Labor and Pensions (HELP) Committee as well as the Appropriations Subcommittee on Labor, Health and Human Services, and Education, and Related Agencies (LHHS subcommittee).
“Education is one of the most important rungs on the ladder of opportunity in America. I know this firsthand, as a kid from Cumming, Iowa who went on to obtain an ROTC scholarship to attend Iowa State University. Dave has also been influenced by his own personal experience, which I know will motivate him in his leadership of the Elementary and Secondary Education Subcommittee.
“We share the same goal: to ensure that the education opportunities available to the both of us are available to countless generations to come. I congratulate Dave on this new leadership, and I wish him well. Students in Iowa and around the country will be well-served as a result of his work.”
