Dear Governor Branstad,
I was very disappointed to learn that you had appointed Eric Bookmeyer to a state board. This is not a man of good moral character. He ran a dirty mayoral campaign last fall and attacked citizens not even running against him (city council races) including a mother of 6 and a former council member. I have personally witnessed this man drunk and tossed from a bar here in Mason City. He has also berated persons working at local businesses, yelling at them “Do you know who I am” and “I am the mayor” as he demanded service. He also told a woman in her 50’s that he prefers “younger people with fresh ideas” and left her off a board appointment for that reason. These are only but a few instances of Mr. Bookmeyer’s behavior toward the people he was elected to serve.
Sir, I respect the job you have done serving Iowa. I believe you should think very hard before you hitch your wagon and the fortunes of other Iowans outside Mason City to Eric Bookmeyer. They do not deserve to be subjected to his whims as we here in Mason City have.
Thank you.
Matt Marquardt, citizen of Mason City

If you have an opinion to share with the Governor of Iowa, you can do so here:

Political parties always choose one of their own. Often Republican candidates defeated will be given a job by the party. Political parties are gangs. It would serve freedom greatly to elect independent candidates when possible. That’s just my opinion mon.
Ironic isn’t it that a man with NO VISION would get appointed to a Vision Iowa Board.
Enough said..
Besides what has been already stated. Even the timing is off, if this was a good thing to do.. which it isn’t. Since Mason City always has projects submitted to Vision Iowa Board, he will have to recuse himself from voting. That is just one more way that this moron can s _ _ _ t on Mason City!!
Okay, this is a tough puzzle. 5 letters, starts with s and ends in t but the next word is on…
squat?
So what…easy mistake…
I didn’t mean for it to be anything but some fun with what was, as you said, an easy mistake.
I like word games, even when there are 4 letters and not 5.
OK, I accept that… no problem!!
@ Marybeth
Is the person Matt states the candidate you managed? Jodi Draper? I have to say you all had the closet race and She was so pleasant and yet professional. Mason City missed a person who was truly one of them to be sitting at the table and would have never let it go to her pride and head. But mother of 6 WOW! and working!
Thanks much!! She is one of a kind.. A true gem.
@MaryBeth-Jodi would have made a excellent Councilperson. She is intelligent, honest and caring. Something really lacking in our current council. It is a shame that Jodi and Matt were not elected do to dirty politics. Together they would have done good things for our city.
This is a valid point. I do believe the writing is on the wall with Mr. Bookmeyer. He is in search of a career; he came to Mason City without one, and made one in politics. He doesn’t truly have Mason City in his heart. He has… himself and his interests in his heart. If he could follow his little brother Brent Willet to Des Moines, he would, and in fact, he is, with this appointment. All the better if Mr. Bookmeyer picks up and moves for good 120 miles south.
@Matt-he isn’t going anywhere because he is a leech off his wife and she has her practice here. Without her he has nothing and will never be anything.
Birds of a feather…???
Let out all the evidence Matt. You have everything.
The governor needs to know. It’s on tape and print.
IOWA needs to know. The things you have mentioned are NOT isolated incidents but rather constant.
I as many many others cringe at the mere thought of this guy. The fact he prevails because of lying/cheating is a true shame. He needs to be stopped.
Let’s hope the governor is level in thinking and goes beyond the typical flow of things and people…
Mr. Branstad does not need any more scandals in Des Moines, and he is inviting just that by letting Mr. Bookmeyer into the club there. Mr. Branstad should ask the people of Mason City, real, average citizens, what they think of the mayor. He might just be very astounded to hear what they say.
If you have’nt noticed lately the Pubic servant sector could give a damn what the people that are paying their wages say.
I further submit this to Governor Branstad: Drug test Eric Bookmeyer. There are certain substances that are still illegal in Iowa. I’ll stop there for the time being.
Who gives a raz azz whether he drinks or not?
Your readers could be better served if you would bother to discuss his policies and why they are good or bad (and from what I’ve seen, they’re bad) rather than cheap shots.
Bookmeyer’s policies have been discussed here many times. This letter speaks to Bookmeyer’s character. This is not a cheap shot; I cited specific examples of his behavior and treatment of the people of Mason City. A cheap shot is name-calling, as he did on his radio show against citizens who were candidates for city council. I am speaking the truth as it relates to Bookmeyer’s character, a very important trait of a public official.
I am sure the Governor did homework on Mr. Bookmeyer, but I am certain Mr. Branstad missed the fact that Bookmeyer was arrested in Clinton, Iowa for harassment of a public official and public drunkenness. I would respectfully pass along to the Governor that it is not too late to rid this board of Mr. Bookmeyer before he does any damage in Des Moines. Mr. Branstad, where there is smoke, there is fire. Do not get burned by Eric Bookmeyer. Replace him with an individual with better character.
Could it be pay back for being elected, Grand Marshall, or maybe Bumsteads a drunk to.
Hey Matt-If you had let me know about this earlier I would have signed it with you. I will now write my own letter. Which board was he appointed to??
Better to write a short note yourself at the above URL (link). Bookmeyer was appointed to the Vision Iowa Board.
Bookmeyer has no vision for Mason City. Run down buildings, no good paying jobs, a city filled with drugs, where is the vision? So if he cannot improve our city, what can he contribute the state? NOTHING!
Vision Iowa Board??? Vision Iowa has done nothing for Mason City. The downtown looks as tired as it did before all that money was spent. If you go there at night you will see all the drunks and druggers who have infested the downtown area. There are no new businesses and a lot of the old ones are leaving too. All Bookie has done is raise taxes to support his pet projects. He has destroyed citizen interest in our town. The council meetings are a laugh.
@Matt-Done. Thank you.
