MASON CITY – Police took a report Sunday from a citizen that a building was in disrepair and that a wall had collapsed.
An officer was dispatched to 1002 6th Street SW to check on the building, owned by Ben Villarreal and Cleo Martinez Villarreal. Police attempted to call the owners but apparently had no success.
At the building location, there appeared to be serious neglect and damage to the building, and debris scattered about the property.
The east wall, which abuts a sidewalk, had large cracks etched into the outer surface.
The north end of the building featured a collapsed privacy fence and a large amount of trash and junk strewn about. The fence abuts an alley. There were children in the vicinity.
The west wall of the building had partially collapsed, exposing more brick underneath. The collapsed portion appeared to have been repaired at some point.
The front door featured an American flag.
There was no word on whether city officials new about the potentially dangerous situation at the location.
