NIT – The Obamacare website – Healthcare.gov – struggled to take applications and shut down unexpectedly Monday as people swarmed the site on the final day to get health care coverage for 2014.

According to federal officials, Monday was a “record day” with more than 3 million visits to the website and 1 million phone calls as of 8 PM.  An expected 7 million consumers will sign up for coverage under the Affordable Care Act.

President Obama said Monday that he signed the Affordable Care Act “so millions could know the peace of mind that comes with health insurance” but thousands were unable to complete their applications Monday amid on-going technical issues with the web site.

Throughout Monday, visitors to the website were told to leave an email address and a “place in line” would be held.  The same was true for callers, who were told to leave a phone number and wait for a call back.  Persons who called Monday and were unable to complete enrollment in a plan were told that a representative would call them back at a later date and help them complete enrollment.

Leading up to the deadline, federal officials said repeatedly that “6 out of 10 uninsured Americans can get covered for $100 per month or even less – some for a lot less.”  Options for Iowans were said to be sparse.  Only a handful of providers initially applied to offer coverage to consumers in Iowa, and plans were still said to cost hundreds of dollars a month.
