Cerro Gordo, surrounding counties continue to lose population

Population continues to decline in North Iowa. Why?
Population continues to decline in North Iowa. Why?

WASHINGTON – U.S. census data show that the exodus from Cerro Gordo county and surrounding areas continues.

In 2010, data showed that 44,151 people lived in Cerro Gordo county. Now, an estimated 43,575 are here, a loss of nearly 600 people or 1.3%.

Things aren’t much better in Floyd county to the east, where population also dropped 1.3% from 2010.

Hancock county dropped about 2.2% over the same 3-year span, and Franklin county lost 1.24%. Butler county was the only county surrounding Cerro Gordo county that gained, with about 1% more.

The metro counties in Iowa saw the biggest gains: Polk, Johnson, Linn, Scott, Sioux, Dubuque, Story.

Many people in North Iowa blame an aging population and low birth rate for the population decline. Some say there just aren’t enough amenities to lure young families. Others say low-paying jobs and stagnant business climate is keeping people away.

We left, no good jobs, no culture, no diversity, no community pride. Lots of negativity, lots of drugs, lots of crime, lots of hypocrisy, lots of shitty weather!! Don’t see that changing anytime soon!!

Glad you are gone. People with attitudes like your’s are most of the problem.

So-long: “…no diversity…lots of drugs, lots of crime…”

Can’t expect to have diversity without a lot of crime and drugs to go along with it, especially when the diversity is Roody-Poos.

Got to respect bro scientist HH. She knows only browns and blacks commit crime. Now that’s some good bro science.

We are losing people because there are no good jobs here. The jobs that are here pay nothing so why stay and work for peanuts when you can move and make a good life for your family.

The Revolution is underway. You’ll know what I’m talking about soon enough. Then populations of smart people will begin flocking here in droves. Have to steam roll over the stagnant thinkers. There’s no other way but full steam ahead. Don’t go around them…plow through them.

The primary factor is no great job opportunities, and Mason citys stagnant political officials….Not willing to grow or lure businesses in even though I35/avenue of Saints runs through m.c. Some of Mason citys politicians want to remain the big fish in the fish bowl…Maybe they need to be reminded their a turd in the punch bowl!!!

Low paying jobs and a bunch of crooks in our local politic’s are at fault.

Glad your still there. I guess only You can complain, what have you done to make a difference in River city???????? LVS your one of the most negative people on here!! I’ll be anxious too see your Actions for change, not talk about how poor city government is and what their doing wrong!!

Floyd County is EAST of Cerro Gordo…

The entire article is ruined.

If wife and I didn’t work here we’d be gone.

The first wave left in the 70’s and early 80’s. Now another wave is leaving. All the smart people left. What’s left are the people who can’t get out.
