No. 1 NIACC seeks berth in final four on Thursday

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. – The top-seeded NIACC women’s basketball team is one win away from the final four.

NIACC (32-2) faces ninth-seeded Cincinnati State Technical and Community College (19-10) at 6 p.m. Thursday in the NJCAA Division II quarterfials.

NIACC won its first national tournament game in 20 years with its 100-49 victory over Dakota College of Bottineau on Tuesday. Sophomore Chelsey Jacox led the Lady Trojans with 22 points and sophomore Emily Bell scored a career-high 21 points with seven 3-point goals.

Cincinnati State stopped eighth-seeded Kankakee CC 83-63 in its tournament opener on Tuesday.

The winner of Thursday’s quarterfinal advances to Friday’s 8 p.m. semifinal. The loser plays at 3 p.m. on Friday.

Notes: NIACC coach Kelli Terrell has a career record of 62-34 … Jacox, the school’s all-time leader in scoring and assists, has 1,120 career points and 295 career assists … Lateeka Thompson has 828 career points (8th on school’s all-time list), 357 career assists (7th on school’s all-time list), 164 career assists (8th on school’s all-time list) and 166 career steals (5th on school’s all-time list) … Bell ranks third on the school’s career list with 104 3-point goals … Jennifer Currier (1986-88) ranks second with 107 career 3-point goals … Kadejah Young has 95 career 3-point goals, which is tied for fourth with Terrell (2003-05).
