Waterloo police investigate assault by “several black males” at mall

WATERLOO – Police is Waterloo had their hands full with a mall assault that later led to a shooting and fight in a hospital emergency room.

On Wednesday, March 12, 2014 at approximately 7:11 PM, Waterloo Police and Waterloo Fire Rescue were dispatched to Crossroads Mall, 2060 Crossroads Boulevard on report of an assault victim. Officers found the victim, Keith Devon Hayes, age 20, of 943 Conger, Waterloo, IA, unconscious on the floor near the carousel in the middle of the mall. The victim was taken to Allen Hospital for treatment of his injuries. According to witnesses, Hayes was assaulted by several black males who hit him and kicked him in the head.

Later that evening at approximately 9:04 PM, Waterloo Police were dispatched to 428 Cherry Street on report of shots fired. A short time later, police received a call that the victim was at Allen Hospital. As officers responded to Allen Hospital, they received a call of a possible fight in the Allen Hospital Emergency room. When officers arrived, they found that there had been an argument between friends of Hayes and friends of the shooting victim, but that Allen Security had the situation under control.

The shooting victim was identified as Tondrell NMN Gary, age 18, of 914 Mobile Street, Waterloo. He was shot in the left shoulder blade while sitting in a vehicle on Florence Street. The shots were fired from inside another passing vehicle. No description on the vehicle or suspects.

These incidents appear to be connected and remain under investigation.
