MASON CITY – Contractors are being sought by the city of Mason City to clean up nuisance properties.

The city will be cracking down on nuisance properties with tall grass this spring. The city is seeking quotes from contractors to mow grass and weeds for nuisance complaints. Written proposals are being accepted at the office of Development Services in City Hall.

According to city code, the dense growth of weeds, vines, brush or any other similar vegetation or grass more than one foot (1′) in height, on property located within the city limits is declared a hazard to public safety and health and a public nuisance.

The code says that in the event a property owner fails to control, destroy or cut weeds or other growth which constitutes a nuisance, the city clerk may serve a notice upon the property owner indicating that the nuisance be abated within five days.

If the property owner fails to abate the nuisance, then the city may perform the required action and assess the costs against the property owner’s property tax.
