STORM LAKE – The Southwest Sanitary District serving the south side of Storm Lake has a break in a sewer line leading to the wastewater treatment plant.
A city of Storm Lake contractor reported the leak Tuesday morning after finding wastewater flowing under the snow.
The Southwest district stopped the leak Tuesday afternoon and was working Wednesday morning to repair the line.
An unknown amount of untreated wastewater was released. However, it is frozen solid behind silt fences. The district estimates 2,000 gallons reached and froze on top of ice-filled Outlet Creek, but cautions that is a very rough estimate.
The DNR will continue to monitor the situation and consider appropriate enforcement action.
