CLEAR LAKE – Officials today confirmed that Clear Lake has been officially named as the new home to a Fortune 100 company and approximately 160 new jobs.
“We got word the company has given the affirmative approval to the capital expenditure,” Clear Lake City Administrator Scott Flory told NIT. “The work is now underway on site plan and building construction reviews. Hopefully they will start moving dirt in April. It will take about 18 months to build.”
The typ of work is said to be manufacturing. The identity of the company may not be released until construction on the project is nearly complete.
The company will bring 164 jobs to Clear Lake at average of $39,000/year, not including fringe benefits. Total payroll will be $6.5 million annually.
The project has a capital investment cost of $65 million to build and equip. The total anticipated tax base will be $19 million.
The project will be located in the Luker Memorial Industrial Park on Lots 6 & 7. The site is 39 acres. Currently it is farmed.

All I can say is it sounds like 164 more good jobs than Mason City has attracted in the last 20 years!

I heard a plausible explanation for the secrecy tonight. Since the company is going to close 2 other centers to update into Clear Lake, they don’t want those other sites to become problems while they are building and preparing this center.
I don’t know if it’s fact, but it’s certainly sensible.
I looked for Wal Mart on the Fortune 100 and couldn’t find it listed. Not sure if they mean the current list or former as well? Anyway finding the current list is a bit elusive. I’m assuming they are referring to Fortune magazine’s list? Regardless, this just shouldn’t be the way city government conducts its business. Secrecy until after construction is complete doesn’t give the citizens proper rebuttal options if they are opposed for any reason.
People have a legitimate right to be concerned with the type of business that comes to town, especially if they specialize in importing and distributing Chinese made goods, or are dangerous chemicals that could pose environmental hazards. Actually this is quite unprecedented really, as most of the time when a company wants to build there are public notices posted. It’s VERY FISHY that the company wants to wait until after the building is completed to reveal its name.
It may be a stretch, but imagine a Chinese Military installation,or a Military Black Site for detention of civilians? The people wouldn’t know until they were detained. Governments that behave in secret are conditioning citizens to relinquish their rights to know, grooming them for continued executive decisions. Totalitarianism doesn’t happen overnight…it’s a series of steps, and this is a step towards, not away from authoritarian absolute control.
You have this warped sense going on right now, you think it’s Walmart even though you even said it isn’t a fortune 100, yet you are spreading the word that it is Walmart. Like I said they wouldn’t have 2 walmarts within 10 miles of each other.
No, I didn’t say it was Wal Mart, many people on KIMT Facebook page were saying that. I said that it MAKES SENSE if it were going to be a Wal Mart (DISTRIBUTION CENTER NOT RETAIL STORE) because Wal Mart’s are controversial and many people show up to protest their being built. In some communities they have been driven out by city councils passing rules against them. Then I looked for a list of these so-called Fortune 100’s and didn’t see Wal Mart on it, but it was in the past.
Now I just saw a list that said Wal Mart is number 2 on the list. WTF list is good and what isn’t? It’s all so damn confusing. The only other distribution center in Iowa is in Mt. Pleasant. Mankato has a food distribution center which is currently being built, unless that is being scrapped in favor of this one? I’ll research Mankato and see if I can find out if that project is still going.

Yes, I recall you saying that. But that doesn’t change the rationale that it could be that they are closing two older sites which they don’t want to tip off before they are ready to be replaced.
Whatever it is, I’m sure it meets the local coding and I’m not worried at all about who is the ultimate occupier.
For now, we have a name of a corporation which is building it and they’ve been upfront about what they will do with the building once it’s built.
Okay, but just so you call it for what it is: Corporatocracy and Oligarchy. I don’t want any illusions we are running a community based democracy anymore.
I heard this is going to be a Wal Mart; which would explain the secrecy since people protest when they come to town. If this is the case, I think it should be the END of the careers of the ENTIRE Clear Lake City Council, North Iowa Corridor, the Board of Supervisors, and everyone working up at City Hall in Clear Lake. Bringing Wal Mart to town solidifies the influx of Chinese made goods, the outsourcing of jobs, and sub standard wages. I can’t pack fast enough if this is true.
