Iowa State falls to No. 1 Minnesota, 27-12

AMES, Iowa – The Iowa State wrestling team (9-7 overall, 1-2 Big 12) fell to No. 1 Minnesota (14-1 overall, 7-1 Big Ten) 27-12 Sunday afternoon on Senior Day at Hilton Coliseum. Seniors Boaz Beard (184), John Nicholson (157) and Ben Perna (285) were all honored prior to the start of the dual.

Earl Hall kicked the dual off at 125 pounds with a bang, pinning Minnesota’s Sam Brancale after trailing 8-4 with less than 30 seconds left in the match. Hall opened up a 4-0 lead early with an explosive double-leg takedown that put Brancale to his back.

Brancale notched a takedown late in the first period to cut the deficit to 4-2. He then tallied a three-point nearfall in the second to take a 6-4 lead heading into the final stanza. Hall caught Brancale with 24 seconds left with his signature cement mixer, putting him to his back and getting the fall with time dwindling.

The Homestead, Fla., native now has six falls on the year, as he improved his record to 18-10 overall and 8-4 in duals. The win was Hall’s fourth straight.

In the main event of the dual, top-ranked 197-pounder Kyven Gadson was pitted against No. 5 Scott Schiller.

Gadson controlled the pace of the match from start to finish, notching two takedowns in periods one and two. He led 5-1 at the start of the final period. Schiller scored a late takedown, but Gadson prevailed 6-4. It was Gadson’s first win in four career matches vs. the Gopher All-American.

The Waterloo, Iowa, native finished the dual season 15-0, extending a 30-match dual win streak that dates back to Nov. 25, 2012 today.

At 165 pounds, No. 9 Michael Moreno downed the Gophers’ Danny Zilverberg, 7-3 with 3:03 of riding time for career win No. 60. The Urbandale, Iowa, native pumped out three takedowns in the match, finishing the dual season with a team leading 39 takedowns.

The Cyclone All-American is now 25-6 overall and leads the 2013-14 Cyclones in wins. He finished the dual season with a six-match win streak.

No. 11 Tanner Weatherman fell 10-6 in a wild match at 174 pounds to No. 6 Logan Storley. The Gopher All-American got the win behind two reversals in key scramble situations in the match. The loss drops Weatherman to 21-13 overall on the season.

Iowa State returns to the mat March 8, as it travels to Norman, Okla. to compete in the Big 12 Championships at historic McCasland Field House.
