Iowa loses big home game to Wisconsin, 79-74

IOWA CITY – Iowa could not hold serve at home and payback Wisconsin for an earlier season road loss, as the Badgers were able to topple them again, 79-74.

Four players scored in double-figures for the Hawkeyes. They include: Roy Marble (21), Josh Oglesby (17), Gabe Olaseni (10), and Mike Gesell (10). Roy Devyn Marble registered the first double-double of his career with 21 points and 11 assists.

Iowa couldn’t keep pace with Wisconsin, trailing 40-31 at the half, as the Badgers shot 57% from the field in the first half while Iowa shot just 42%. After falling behind 5-0, Wisconsin came roaring back to build a lead it would never relinquish until Iowa made a second half charge. Iowa lead 54-51 with 10:30 left in the game, and later 64-60 at the 4:27 mark. Iowa clung to a 72-71 led with 1:01 left, but a jumper by Kaminsky put Wisconsin ahead for good, and the Badgers hit their free throws the rest of the way to seal the game.

Iowa coach Fran McCaffery said his team didn’t play good enough defense to win.

“Not well. No, not well. Not well at all,” McCaffery said. “The only thing that really worked was kind of staying in the zone. We didn’t play that that well, but at least we had some semblance of keeping them in front of us. They made so many threes early, went by us relatively quickly. We went to the zone, and the three quarter, the three-quarter back to the zone was good for a while, and then had we gotten some of those stops, I think it would have been that much more effective, but obviously we didn’t.”

Wisconsin was lead by Frank Kaminsky with 21 points.

Iowa’s Aaron White could manage just 4 points for the game.

Roy Devyn Marble has moved up to No. 9 on Iowa’s career scoring list. He moves past Dean Oliver. Marble now has 1,565 career points. Roy Marble and Roy Devyn Marble moved up to No. 5 on the father-son scoring combos list. They move past the Maravich combos (Pete and Jaeson; 3,667 points) (Pete and Josh; 3,671 points).
