AMES, Iowa – Senior Brogan Austin (Boone, Iowa) capped a strong afternoon for the Drake track and field teams on the first day of the Iowa State Classic by breaking the school record in the men’s 5,000 meters with a time of 13:59.71.
Austin won his flight of the event and finished ninth overall in the talented field to best the previous mark set by Jason Lehmkuhle in 2000 by just 17-hundreths of a second.
“I was hoping to go faster but the pace was easy for me, so I was confident in what I was doing. It just fell in place and was a quality time,” Austin said. “It’s good for my confidence to have the second-fastest time in the MVC behind Indiana State’s John Mascari. But my bigger goal is to qualify for NCAAs and hopefully we can work together to put up good times at the conference meet.”
