Mexican national caught trying to smuggle pot into U.S.

JAMUL, CA – U.S. Border Patrol agents assigned to the checkpoint on State Route 94 intercepted a commercial vehicle on Tuesday that had more than 1,500 pounds of marijuana concealed within pallets of stone.

Yesterday at approximately 3 p.m., agents encountered a 54-year-old male Mexican national driving a 1998 Volvo semi-tractor. A K-9 alerted at pre-primary and agents referred the vehicle for a secondary inspection. The truck bed contained several large mesh-wire baskets filled with rocks. A backscatter X-ray system detected anomalies during a non-intrusive inspection of the trailer and its cargo. Agents searched beneath the rocks and uncovered ten barrels, a large plastic bag, and five cardboard boxes filled with marijuana. The marijuana weighed approximately 1,541 pounds and had an estimated street value of $924,600.

The suspected smuggler was arrested and transported to the San Diego County Jail and faces state narcotics charges. The narcotics were turned over to the Drug Enforcement Administration and the commercial vehicle and truck bed were seized by the U.S. Border Patrol.
