MASON CITY – A dangerous situation where a man got his snowmobile stuck on a railroad track in Mason City only got worse when he tried to use his pickup truck to try and free it.
The incident took place Saturday evening at about 5:45 PM about 100 yards west of a rail crossing at the 900 block of South Pierce Avenue. Mason City police and a tow truck responded to the scene, where police said a man was snowmobiling and got the skis of his snowmobile stuck on or near the railroad track. This subject then went and drove his pick up truck to the location to try and free his snowmobile. Police did not elaborate on how the man went about trying to free his snowmobile with his truck, but the truck ended up with both wheels on either side of the tracks, 100% blocking the rails.
At the scene, a black pick-up truck and snowmobile could be seen by taking the foot bridge about 100 yards west of S. Pierce, just north of the Big Black pond.
The railroad was informed to shut down any scheduled runs along that track while the two vehicles were removed.
Police said that the railroad employee who came to the scene was going to ask his supervisors whether they wished to file charges. “At this point, I’m not aware of any charges being filed,” an officer told NIT Monday morning. Police would not release the name of the man who was driving the snowmobile and the pickup truck.
