DES MOINES – DHS Director Chuck Palmer and DOC Director John Baldwin are pleased to announce the appointment of Kris Weitzell as Superintendent of the Clarinda Treatment Complex. The appointment is effective immediately.
Weitzell has worked in the Department of Corrections since 1982 and started her career as a Correctional Officer at Mitchellville. She rose through the ranks to become Deputy Warden at Newton prior to coming to Central Office to help oversee operation in the Western Region. Weitzell has been Acting Deputy Superintendent for the Clarinda Treatment Complex since September 2013 assuming the Acting Superintendent role due to the retirement of former Superintendent Mark Lund on January 2, 2014.
Weitzell has a BS in Sociology from Iowa State University and a MA in Public Administration from Drake University.
“Considering the increased challenges facing corrections and mental health today, I look forward to Kris Weitzell’s leadership and experience to help address these challenges today and in the future”, said Director Baldwin.
