WORTH COUNTY – A North Iowa man help police at bay Thursday night before harming himself with a knife.
On Thursday shortly before noon, the Winnebago County Sheriff’s Office recieved a 911 phone call that Matthew Davis, age 21, residing at 4573 Apple Avenue (rural Lake Mills in Worth County) was suicidal and had cut himself. Two officers responded to the residence to help and assist before the ambulance arrived. As the officers approached the house, Davis shot at them and the officer’s returned fire then took cover and called for back up. Law Enforcement from around the area responded and surrounded the area. There was a stand off for about 4 and a half hours with no more shots fired. Davis walked out of the house voluntarily and was taken into custody and transported to Mercy Hospital North Iowa with self-inflicted wounds that he had done with a knife. Davis was later released from Mercy and then transported to the Worth County Jail. Davis is being held on charges of attempted murder, a Class B Felony.
At the scene and assisting the Worth County Sheriff’s Office were Winnebago County Sheriff’s Office, Lake Mills Police Department, Manly Police Department, Iowa State Patrol, Department of Criminal Investigations, North Iowa Task Force Special Operations Group, Lake Mills Ambulance, Forest City Paramedic and Worth County Emergency Management Administrator.
