MASON CITY – It doesn’t meet the city’s unwritten standard as amazing, but a pretty good part-time job driving a city transit bus is now open with the City of Mason City.
To unofficially qualify as amazing, a job must pay at least $9.50 per hour, or so third ward city council Jean Marinos member has so decreed. This job falls short, paying just $8.50 per hour, but it does have a perk hat many part-time jobs do not offer: IPERS benefits.
IPERS is a core retirement plan that allows public employees to retire knowing that their benefits are secure. IPERS is a public agency and was established for the purpose of providing a retirement plan to public employees throughout Iowa. IPERS benefits are designed to supplement personal savings and Social Security benefits in retirement. Benefits also offer financial protection for families in the event of death or disability.
As a part-time City Transit Driver, IPERS is part of the package along with the starting wage of $8.50. There are two shifts available: 6:15 AM – 12:00 PM or 12:00 PM – 6:00 PM, or on a substitute basis. The applicant must have a good driving record as well as a Class C CDL with passenger endorsement. The city will assist the chosen applicant in obtaining the appropriate endorsement. The position is subject to drug testing.
The Mason City Public Transit is open to the general public, including those with disabilities.
Application can be picked up and turned in at City Hall, 10 First Street NW. Deadline for filing applications is 4:30 PM, February 3, 2014.
I can’t even fathom how anyone can ride those transits. I would rather walk than ride on one of those again. For one they stink they should make those drivers clean their bus after their shifts, why make others suffer the stench. Another reason is that they drive so freakin fast that one day they’re going to give an elderly person a heart attack or kill someone. If those drivers think you’re in their way, kiss your ass goodbye because they think they own the roads. Its ridiculous.

I thought maybe they got paid for how fast they can get from point a to point b. They drive like there in a NASCAR race. Not only there speed but jumping curbs there just plain nuts. I worked downtown for a summer got to see it first hand.
Well, they are old and don’t see very well. Hard to see that pesky speedometer.
It is what it is. A part time job that is good for a supplemental income if you are on Social Security. If you are going to try to live on it you are going to have a real tough time.
8.50 an hour what a slap in the face. If your 55 an over just what is IPERS GOING TO DO FOR YOU? You prolly have to be invested for 5 years to get anything so its not going to add up to much. 8.50 what a shame.

Exactly. IPERS is a rip-off for everyone. IT should be scrapped for basic 401K plans like the rest of the schmucks get.
I’d bet that anyone that has worked at least 30 years under the IPERS plan would disagree with you. It’s a lot safer then any 401k plan, as long as the government keeps it’s fingers out of it.
Then they should stop people from being able to double dip from one state to another. Remember the Chief of police from Minnesota with a full retirement pension plan who descended into the small town of Clear Lake to rake in $90,000 more a year to drive around an oversized black truck? Why should he be able to tap Iowa’s as well?
