WOMEN’S BB: ISU’s Johnson named Big 12 Freshman of the week

logo_iowa_state_cyclonesIRVING, Texas – Iowa State women’s basketball freshman Seanna Johnson was named the Phillips 66 Big 12 Freshman of the Week for the for the third time this season, the league announced Monday.

Johnson averaged 12.5 points, 9.0 rebounds and 2.5 assists in Iowa State’s win over Texas Tech and loss to No. 15 Oklahoma State. The rookie guard opened the week with a 10-point, nine-rebound outing versus Texas Tech. She then added a double-double performance against OSU with 14 points and 10 rebounds. It was Johnson’s third double-double of the season and sixth game with 10-plus rebounds.

Her signature moment came when she hit her only 3-point attempt of the week with 1:51 remaining against OSU to pull the Cyclones within four points in trying to mount a late comeback. Johnson was .636 (7-of-11) from the floor and .750 (9-of-12) from the free-throw line in the two games combined.

This is her third-career weekly honor and the sixth Freshman of the Week honor for Iowa State this season, as fellow freshman Jadda Buckley earned three weekly honors. The Cyclones have captured a league-best six Freshman of the Week honors so far this season.

The six honors ties the school record six Freshman of the Week honors the Cyclones grabbed in 1998, with Cyclone greats Stacy Frese and Megan Taylor nabbing six between the two.

Johnson and the No. 13 Iowa State Cyclones return to the court on Wednesday, Jan. 15 at 7:00 p.m. to take on West Virginia in Hilton Coliseum.
