COLUMBUS, OHIO – Iowa showed Sunday that it is back in a big way on the national college basketball scene.
The Hawkeyes came to Columbus in search of a signature win and got it, knocking off the 3rd-ranked Ohio State Buckeyes – a team it had not beaten in years – 84-74.
Iowa was lead by Big Ten Player of the Week Roy Devyn Marble with 22 points, 3 rebounds and 3 assists. Ohio native Aaron White came out firing as well, hitting 4 of 5 shots from the field and finishing with 19 points and 6 rebounds. Melsahn Basabe turned in a double-double, with 11 points and 10 rebounds.
LaQuinton Ross lead OSU with 22 points. All-American point guard Aaron Craft was held in check, with only 6 points and 6 assists.
The victory marks Iowa’s first win over a top-five team since Dec. 15, 2001 (83-65 victory at No. 2 Missouri)
The win over Ohio State “was huge for momentum for our program, in terms of making a step,” Iowa coach Fran McCaffery said.
College basketball analyst Fran Fraschilla says Iowa has arrived.
“So Iowa has 3 losses to teams in Top 10 by 12 total points & all away from home. Now are 14-3 with win at OSU & look like Top 10 team to me,” he said.
