DES MOINES – The 2014 session of the 85th General Assembly of the Iowa legislature convened at 10:06 AM Monday. The Senate’s session began with a prayer, the pledge of allegiance, and then remarks from Senate President Pam Jochum.

Both the Democratic-controlled Senate and the Republican-controlled House adjourned before 11 AM Monday.

During its short session, the Iowa Senators Gronstal and Amanda Ragan applauded the accomplishments of Donald Katterhenry of Mason City, a worker at TMC Transportation.

“Donald Katterhenry is from Mason City,” Gronstal said. Thanks to the GAP Tuition Program we funded last year, he has earned his Commercial Driver’s License at North Iowa Area Community College and is now employed by TMC Transportation.”

“Helping Iowans like Don expand their abilities helps reduce the shortage of skilled workers that business people say hurts growth and investment in Iowa,” Ragan said. “His example and the opportunities at NIACC make the case, I think, that helping Iowans help themselves is the way to go.”

This year’s session is expected to be shorter and shy away from hot-button issues because it is an election year.

In the 2013 legislative session, a plan to cut commercial property taxes was passed, as was a plan to fund Iowa schools and a health care bill to cover low income residents.

Iowa has over $900 million in surplus revenues at this time.
