Joint statement by House GOP leaders on trade promotion authority

WASHINGTON – The following statement was issued today by House Speaker John Boehner, Majority Leader Eric Cantor, Majority Whip Kevin McCarthy and Republican Conference Chair Cathy McMorris Rodgers:

“We applaud today’s bipartisan introduction of Bipartisan Congressional Trade Priorities Act of 2014 to reauthorize Trade Promotion Authority, which strengthens Congress’ role in trade policy.

“Expanding trade will grow our economy, open new markets to American producers, and create new jobs and increase take-home pay for American workers.

“Historically, the White House and Congress have engaged in a bipartisan effort to enact Trade Promotion Authority (TPA). While we are encouraged by today’s bill introduction, it is critically important that the President make the case to the American people about the benefits of free trade and work with Congress to secure significant bipartisan support that will be needed to pass both Houses.

“When Congress has provided TPA to presidents in the past, the result has been trade agreements that have spurred economic growth throughout the United States for farmers, ranchers, manufacturers, and thousands more by opening new markets to American exports. Most recently, through this mechanism, Congress approved three free trade agreements in 2012 with Colombia, Panama and South Korea which have had a significant positive effect on our economy – supporting an estimated 250,000 jobs spanning all sectors of our economy.”
