UPDATED: MCFD battles West State Street fire

MASON CITY – A house fire was contained Tuesday by Mason City firefighters.

According to the Mason City Fire Department, on January 7, 2014 at 12:07 PM, the Mason City Fire Department responded to an alarm for fire and smoke in a house located at 1129 West State Street.  The fire was discovered and reported by an occupant retuning to the residence.  The property is owned and occupied by Angela Greimann.

The residents had been using a masonry wood-burning fireplace the previous day, and embers from the fire fell into a crack in the firebox and eventually ignited floor joists in the basement.  The fire also entered a hollow wall cavity and spread vertically to the first and second floors.  Firefighters removed lath and plaster to extinguish the fire and check for extension.

Firefighters remained on the scene until 3:01 P.M.
