DES MOINES – Warnings for extreme life threatening cold will continue through Tuesday morning, according to the National Weather Service in Des Moines.
An extremely cold arctic airmass will keep temperatures well below zero through Tuesday morning, the agency reported. These temperatures combined with gusty northwest winds will produce life threatening wind chills. The most extreme wind chills will occur through this morning with widespread values of 40 to 55 below. These wind chills will be the coldest in nearly 20 years over much of the area.
Wind Chill Warning remains in effect until noon Tuesday.
Winds of 20 to 35 mph and higher gusts are expected, combined with temperatures 10 to 20 below are creating wind chill values from 35 to 50 below zero across the region. The coldest of these readings is occurring over Northern Iowa.
Wind Chill values: the most extreme and life threatening conditions are expected through this morning with wind chills from 35 below south to 55 below North. Over Central Iowa wind chills will drop to around 40 to 45 below.
Extreme wind chills of this magnitude can result in frost bite in minutes and lead to hypothermia or death if precautions are not taken.

Throughout the North Iowa area, schools are closed and other meetings and event shave been called off. There was a least one reported emergency this morning, as the Kohl’s Department Store was closed just as it opened due to an apparent carbon monoxide leak.

I just found out that they declared martial law in indiana because of the weather. Anybody found outside will be ticketed and taken to a shelter by force and the National Guard has been activated and all roads have been closed.

I have a friend that went to the colts game last weekend and the govenor gave a press conference this morning, this friend told me what was said and they were very careful not to use the term martial law but when all roads are closed and you are ticketed and incarcerated if you are caught on the roads and the National Guard is activated that is basically martial law.
They are not calling it martial law because it ISN’T martial law. The national guard is aiding local and state government not superseding them. Chicken little called and said you should stop doing his work.
Do you know what the definition of martial law is? I do and there are different levels of martial law and even though it is the lowest level they are in martial law right now. Do your research before you spout off.

They are not superseding. Learn to read.
The level they are at right now is the control of movement. This is not entirely at the control of the military but a joint endeavour.
I was in the military for over 12 years and we were trained what to do when martial law is declared and what our job would be.
I am very impressed. I was in the military as well. I ALSO learned how to read and comprehend the english language. Martial Law is either declared or it isn’t. There are not “levels”.
there are different levels, they don’t say level 1 or level 2 but the way they say it is of levels of importance, like control of movement, control of media, control of commerce, and so on. From what my friend told me, what was happening there it is a form of martial law, according to the posting by matt what is going on there is still a form of martial law or close to it.
