Afghan commandos from two Kandaks defeat insurgents in Musa Qalah

HELMAND PROVINCE, Afghanistan – Afghan commandos from the 7th and 9th Special Operations Kandaks coordinated efforts during a combat operation killing one insurgent and injuring another Jan. 4 in Musa Qalah district’s Doab village.

Commandos from the 9th SOK were searching for a suspected Taliban weapons cache when they came under mortar and machine-gun fire. The commandos returned fire and repelled the attack.

During the operation, only one commando suffered an injury. Commando medics immediately treated the soldier’s gunshot wound that went through his arm and evacuated him to a hospital for further treatment.

Taliban fighters use the village as a base of operation to launch attacks in efforts to destabilize the province, said Lt. Col. Najibullah Baloch, 9th SOK commander. However, both the 7th and 9th SOK are committed to securing the village as part of the provincial governor’s security priorities.

Helmand Gov. Naeem Baluch has previously stated that forcing the Taliban out of the province is vital to securing Helmand. By working together, Afghan National Security Forces are able to defeat the insurgents.

“Cooperation between these security forces is the key to winning the battle against the Taliban and keeping peace in Helmand,” said Lt. Col. Mohammed Zebiullah, the 7th SOK commander who coordinated closely with Baloch before, during and after the operation.
