MASON CITY – Extreme cold on its way to North Iowa has school district officials in Mason City planning ahead today, as students will not be attending classes on Monday, January 6th.
Due to the extreme weather predictions for Monday, January 6, 2014, the Mason City Community School District has cancelled school and classes for that day. The Administrative Offices located at 1515 S. Pennsylvania Ave. will be open.
Already cold temps will soon be nosediving in the North Iowa region, weather forecasters are predicting. Temps for Monday will reach double-digits below zero and extremely dangerous wind chills.
Already in North Iowa, wind chill warnings and blowing snow advisories are in effect with no relief is sight for days.

I do agree with the decision to not have school as some kids have to stand outside for sometimes up to 10-15 minutes waiting for the bus. Lets just all think safety.
In case it wasn’t evident in my previous post, I also agree that it is a good idea. It give parents a chance to arrange child care also. Stay warm.
@LVS- You and I must be about the same age. Hell I remember walking to the ice skating rink @ east park and about 2-3 hours later having to walk home about 16 blocks and sometimes it was very cold and also very,very fun, I for one have pampered my grown up children but I have to say my boys ran 5-6 miles every nite after wrestling practice. I thought they were nuts but they got most of their college payed for by their hard work
USMC, I also walked that walk to East Park but I seem to remember a warming house that was there. And, yes, the walk home was cold, but after all that skating, we had our motors humming, and that kept us warm. And, I do remember school closing occasionally. Maybe not as often as they do now, but, back in the day, the threat of countless lawsuits was almost non-existent. The school buses were for the farm kids and if the bus couldn’t get to a pickup spot, the farm kids stayed home. My mom would drive me and and my brother and sister to school (if the weather made that necessary) because she didn’t work outside the home. If any other kids in the neighborhood needed a ride, they hopped in too. And we did the same if our mom couldn’t take us. That was common back then. I also remember the line up of cars around the horseshoe at John Adams before and after school.
@USMC-I am probably a little bit older than you. There was no John Adams when I went to school. As a matter of fact I ties in the iron on the John Adams and High School when they were built. Kids were different back when I was a kid. We played outside in all kinds of weather because we didn’t have all the toys they have today. The rule for the schools was back then that the schools will be open. If you couldn’t get there it was excused but not very many didn’t make it. Some of the farm kids couldn’t get there because the roads were closed (there was a lot of farm kids back then). Different times I guess but it was a great way to grow up.
There are a few superintendents in Minnesota that are pretty upset with their governor calling off the schools. They say that is their decision and by calling it off 3 days ahead of the potential problem sets a precedent that they don’t want or need. It is just another example of the government trying to control our lives. That being said, I just find it hard to believe that we survived to get old with all the things we did wrong like walking to school no matter what the weather (they never shut down the schools when I was young, riding in cars without seat belts, eating the wrong food, smoking cigarettes, drinking 3.2% beer, riding in the back of pickups, no child seats for kids, playing with toy guns and BB guns, going outside to play and not coming home until after dark, and on and on. We are raising a bunch of sissy’s.

LVS-I think some of it is that back in our day we actually took responsibility for ourselves as did our parents. It was our parents job to make sure we were dressed correctly and safe in all types of weather. Today if something happened to one of the kids people are too quick to blame it on someone else such as the school district. If something happened to a child a parent would sue the school district and with the judges we have nowadays the parent would probably win their lawsuit. Not enough parents are taking the responsibility upon themselves like our parents did for us.
I agree that the government is involved too much. The thing is today is not like the 70’s. Too many murders, rapes, abductions, and so on. I think they made the right choice to cancel classes. You say kids are being raised being “wusseys” but yet parents like you are idiots and dont give a shit to send your kid to school with it being 60 below. Back in the day people were too nieve.
It’s not safe for all those kids who walk to their bus stops and wait up to 5 or 10 minutes outside. 50 below wind chill is dangerous!
We used to stand out in 50 below weather when I went to school back in the 70’s and 80″s!
I didn’t say it’s never been done. I simply stated that from a health and safety standpoint, it’s not safe.

It’s not whether there is heat in the schools or not. It’s getting the kids to school and back home safely. I’m sure you would be the 1st to bitch at the school district if someone would be badly hurt or, God forbid, die because they were stuck out in the bitter cold. Our Government Schools are not worried about the kid’s safety, they want an extra day off.
It’s the parents responsibly to keep their children safe. It’s the Government Schools responsibility to educate our children.

@bodacious-what watchdog states is not necessarily untrue. I lot of company’s and government businesses (schools included) do not mind shutting down as they save a lot of money on operating cost. They factor in so many days a year when they can shut down and it is figured into their budget’s. I used to do it all the time when my schedule allowed it. It drove all that operating cost directly to the bottom line. Of course you must be on schedule to do that.
