Legal pot sales booming in Colorado as stores open

hemp marijuanaDENVER – Marijuana for recreational use is now on sale in Colorado, and swarms of people made their way to about 40 newly-opened stores there offering cannabis to the general public. Only a general ID is needed to make the buy.

According to the Denver Post, people “cheerfully” stood in lines for hours to buy legal marijuana starting on Wednesday. The New York Times reported that people were coming from all over the country to make purchases.

CNN reported that one man bought about an eighth of an ounce of pot at a price of $59.50.

“Hundreds of tourists and residents … eagerly took part in the country’s first-ever sales of state-regulated recreational marijuana,” CNN said Thursday.

One person told NIT that the lines were “long” in Denver, but everyone was orderly and no major problems were being reported as people waited.

“It’s kind of weird that you can buy pot now,” the person said, “I guess it’s a sign of the times.”

The Denver Post reported that Colorado state law allows state residents to buy up to an ounce of marijuana and out-of-state residents a quarter-ounce.

The sale of marijuana is still illegal under federal law.

Opponents of the legalized selling of marijuana have said that drug addiction problems will escalate.
