Barbara Bush recovering from respiratory illness

HOUSTON – Former first lady Barbara Bush is recovering from a respiratory illness in a Houston hospital, a Bush family spokesperson said Thursday.

Mrs. bush was admitted to Methodist Hospital in Houston on December 31st for what spokesman Jim McGrath said was a “respiratory related issue.” McGrath said later that dat that Mrs. Bush “is in great spirits and has already received visits from her husband and family.”

President Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama extended their best wishes to the Bush family Wednesday, saying “Michelle and I send our best wishes to Mrs. Bush for a speedy recovery. Barbara is blessed to have both a loving, supportive family by her side and a vibrant spirit that we hope will have her feeling better soon. I know I speak for Americans everywhere when I say that our thoughts and prayers are with Barbara and her family on this New Year’s Day.”

On Thursday, McGrath sent an update, saying that Mrs. Bush is “still doing great,” is still at Methodist Hospital, and is “definitely keen to get home to her dogs and her husband.”

Others, including former President Bill Clinton, also extended get well wishes to Mrs. Bush.
