Women’s basketball
What’s next: The No. 2 NIACC women’s basketball team returns to action Dec. 28 at the Illinois Central Cougar Holiday tournament. The Lady Trojans face No. 20 Kankakee Community College at 6 p.m. in their first round contest. A total of six rated NJCAA Division II teams are in the eight-team field, including top-ranked Kirkwood.
Last time out: NIACC (11-0 overall, 2-0 in the ICCAC) nipped Kirkwood 115-111 in overtime last Saturday in the NIACC gym in the highest scoring game in NJCAA Division II women’s basketball history. The combined 226 points tops the 225 scored in Schoolcraft College’s (Michigan) 147-78 victory over Jackson Community College (Michigan) in the 2010-11 season.
Sweet 16: NIACC has won 16 straight regular season games. The last loss in the regular season for the Lady Trojans was a 78-58 loss to Iowa Central on Feb. 9, 2013.
Streak broken: NIACC’s win Saturday was the first time since Feb. 16, 2000 that the Lady Trojans topped Kirkwood. The Eagles had won 28 straight games against the Lady Trojans.
Leading the nation: NIACC averages 106.5 points per game, which leads all NJCAA Division II teams. The Lady Trojans also lead the nation with 134 3-point goals and rank first with 23.1 assists per game.
Among the leaders: Sophomore Chelsey Jacox (Plymouth, Minn.) averages 22.9 points per game (second in ICCAC) … Freshman Cortni Rush (Mason City, Ia.) averages 19.3 points per game (3rd in ICCAC) … Jacox has 65 assists (second in ICCAC) … Rush averages 8.2 rebounds per game (fourth in ICCAC).
Lady Trojan tidbits: Jacox (Plymouth, Minn.) has 601 career points, 177 career assists, 93 career steals and 35 career 3-point goals … Sophomore Lateeka Thompson (Burnsville, Minn.) has 561 career points, 106 career assists, 104 career steals and 34 career 3-point goals … Sophomore Kadejah Young (Minneapolis) has 417 career points, 88 career assists, 76 career steals and 66 career 3-point goals … Emily Bell (Algona, Ia.) has 231 career points and 58 career 3-point goals.

Men’s basketball
What’s next: The NIACC men’s basketball team returns to action Jan. 8 at home against Iowa Lakes (8-4 overall, 1-0 in the ICCAC).
Last time out: NIACC (11-5, 0-2) dropped a 85-76 decision to No. 16 Kirkwood last Saturday in the NIACC gym. Sophomore guard Sam Skogen (Mason City, Ia.) led the Trojans with 24 points.
Trojan tidbits: Sophomore David Humphries (Adelaide, Australia) averages 23.1 points per game (third in ICCAC) … Skogen averages 12.8 points per game (14th in ICCAC) … Humphries averages 8.9 rebounds per game (first in ICCAC) … Humphries has 900 career points, which ranks 15th on NIACC’s all-time scoring list … Tyrone Scott (1982-84) ranks 14th with 929 career points … Humphries has 342 career rebounds, 172 career assists, 99 career steals and 97 career 3-point goals … Skogen has 499 career points.

Wrestling
What’s next: The No. 3 NIACC wrestling team returns to action Jan. 4 at the William Penn Invitational in Oskaloosa.
National duals: The Trojans will compete in the 2014 NWCA National Duals at the Iowa Events Center in Des Moines on Jan. 11-12. For ticket information, contact TicketMaster at 1-800-745-3000.
The breakdown for this year’s duals are NCAA Division II (16 teams), NCAA Division III (16 teams), NAIA (16 teams), NJCAA (16 teams), women (12 teams).
Last time out: NIACC’s Yoanse Mejias (Miami, Fla.) placed third at 157 pounds at the Simpson College Invitational on Dec. 7. The Trojans placed seventh in the team standings with 27.5 points.
