CHARLES CITY – Family of a Charles City teen that has been missing since December 4th fears for his safety and is seeking any information on his whereabouts.
Cody Darrell, age 17, has been missing since December 4th, 2013. He drives a silver Ford F-150 pickup truck, which is also missing and he may be driving.
Family of the teen who live in Colorado contacted NIT this week in the hopes of alerting the public to his absence and generating clues that may help in bringing the young man home safely.
According to Brittany Darrell, Cody’s aunt, who lives in Sterling, Colorado, Cody had a “rough” home life, which may have lead to him running away. She told NIT that Cody’s home life and disagreements with his mother, Tiffany Mustard, had lead the teen to talk about running away for some time.
“He had spoken about running away,” Brittany said Thursday via phone. She said that Cody’s mother had relocated Cody from Colorado to South Dakota and then finally to Iowa, to be near a Fort Dodge reformatory school called the Anchor Character Training Center.
“She (Tiffany Mustard) had always thought of Cody as an out-of-control child,” Brittany said. “In reality, he is a great kid … he is so smart. She threatened to put him in that place. We’re worried he might be there.”
A call to the Anchor Character Training Center was placed Thursday by NIT. A person who answered the phone there said “I’ve never heard of Cody Darrell.” The woman on the phone suggested a call to the Harvest Baptist Church in Fort Dodge, where the pastor there, Marvin E. Smith, also administers the reformatory school. A call to the church was answered by Pastor Smith, a very friendly individual. He told NIT that “I don’t know the boy, but if I hear anything, I will call you.”
Brittany said that the Charles City Police Department is investigating the Anchor Character Training Center at this time. According to RealHelpforTeens.com, the Harvest Baptist Church serves the Anchor Character Training Center and “minister(s) to drug and alcohol addictions, gang members, runaways and rebellious teenagers.”
According to Brittany, Pastor Smith is acquainted with Pastor Tim Robbins, who runs the Calvary Baptist Church in Charles City, where Tiffany Mustard was a regular member and where Cody attends school. He plays football for Charles City High School. Pastor Smith told NIT that Pastor Tim Robbins had graduated from his ministry some time ago.
Brittany said that Cody would come back to Colorado for many holidays, where he was initially raised by her parents, Tom and Val Darrell, until he was eight years-old. They are Cody’s grandparents.
“We had temporary custody of Cody,” Tom Darrell told NIT Thursday, again via phone. “I have all the documentation to prove that. It was never permanent, which is how he ended up back with Tiffany.” Tiffany Mustard was with Tom and Val’s son Chad when Cody was born.
Cody’s grandmother, Val, told NIT that “We owe it to Cody to find out why he left.”
NIT also spoke with Cody’s mom, Tiffany Mustard, Thursday evening.
She said that the night Cody went missing, the family had watched TV until 11:30 PM before turning in for the evening. “The next morning, he was gone. I thought maybe he had gone to weightlifting, but there wasn’t any weightlifting that day at the school.”
Tiffany said that she became concerned and called police and had a missing persons report issued.
In the days that have followed Cody’s disappearance, authorities from Charles City to Sterling, Colorado have been put on notice to watch for Cody and his silver Ford F-150 pickup truck. Tiffany told NIT that on one positive lead, “we did learn that his (Cody’s) truck was seen in Sterling. Police there were contacted.
“I feel like he might be safe,” Tiffany continued, due to the leads that were coming in. “He could be with family in Colorado. We just want to know where he is.”

Anonymous The Letter was sent from the Denver Area. Which is were Cdy’s GHranpa and Grandma and his Dad live. The Police are currently comparing the hand writing to see if Cody or his Grandpa wrote the letter. Cody is a Missing Person untill he is found and it doesn’t matter how old he is. It’s all of our responsibility to consider every possibility as to why Cody disappeared on Dec 4th. the key to understanding why Cody would want to run away is in the journal that he worote before his family moved to Charles City. He documented physicl nd emotional abuse endured by himself and his little sisters. Cody gave that journal to Sheriff Steve Brink in Davison County, south Dakota shortly before his family came to Iowa in June of 2012. Wen the sheriff told Cody that he couldn’t help him, Cody later told us that “a piece of his heart shriveled up and died.” He also said that he had “just about lost all hope.” Copies of his journal are in the possession of South Dakota DHS, Iowa DHS, and have been read by law enforcement in Charles City, Iowa, and Mitchell, S Dakota. Those agencies failed to take Cody seriously. Ironically, the Charles City officer that Cody intially contacted as soon as they settled in that town, has since taken an “early retirement” for not taking other victims seriously as well. His name is Todd Smith. The main reason that cody didn’t want to move to Iowa was due to the threat made by his mother, with the help of Pastor Tim Robbins of Calvary Baptist Church in Charles City, to place Cody in the Anchor Character Training Center in Fo Dodge, Iowa. Cody knew if he voiced an opinion different than his mother, or came to the defense of his sister, Angela, and he could be ripped out of his home for 1 to 2 years, with minimal contact with anyone on the outside. Pretty powerful fear to live with day in and day out. How many of us could endure that without finally saying,”this is enough.” I believe that something happened between Cody, Angela, and Tiffany the night of Dec 3rd. On Facebook, Tiffany states that Cody’s little sister, Angela, has cried her eyes out because she blames herself that he is gone. In Tiffany’s words, “Angela just didn’t want Cody to stick up her anymore.” Does anyone else see this as a RED FLAG? We should be told the truth about what happened that night. Tiffany is silent. Was there a disagreement? Did Cody leave on his own accord after another threat was made to put him in a Baptist facility? Did he feel that running was his only recourse? One thing I know for sure, Cody does NOT want to go home. If he is found safe and sound, we owe it to him to listen THIS TIME and honor his wishes. Cody, wherever you are, our family believes in you, loves you, and will welcome you with open arms when you are ready. Love you, Grandma Val.

Someone told me Cody’s truck was sighted at two different locations in Sterling, CO earlier this month.(By the way, neither of these sightings were residential.) Maybe he isn’t in the area now. Maybe he didn’t contact anyone when he was in town. But maybe he is closer than it seems. Maybe when things aren’t so intense, he will try to contact friends or family. I know that is a lot of maybe’s. I just hope he is found soon. It’s been two weeks!

There is no other person in this world that Cody Darrell had more admiration, respect, trust, and love for than his very own Grandpa Tom. Being the “First-born” grandchild and grandson gave him endless opportunities to become the happiest child he could be. And despite the negativity that uncontrollably got in his way at times, his grandpa without question protected his innocence and enabled him to be whoever he wanted to be while reassuring his confidence that he can do whatever he sets his mind to. Thanks to codys grandpa and the rest of Darrell family that supported, nurtured and loved him unconditionally, Cody grew into the PERFECT example of what every parent could want in a child. I cannot emphasize enough how respectful, loving, caring, intelligent, responsible, honest, wise, humble, and fair this 17 yr old young man just was. This is why there is no doubt in my mind that Cody Darrell is the best person I’ve had the privilege of knowing and he deserves nothing less than the world given to him! I would give my own life just to allow this beautiful being to go on to be a living example of all that IS Good in this world. I agree with Brittney Darrell on only one thing, “Cody is a great kid and he is so smart.” Smart and yet like many teens, can’t see past his nose. I doubt he thought his leaving would cause such a stir and that his picture would be in the newspapers across three states and all over the Internet. But then again, what teen doesn’t want to be famous? Meanwhile, family and friends, and even strangers, in three states, fret and wonder where Cody is and is he okay. I doubt he planned this alone. Harvist Baptist Church is known as The Cult in FD. Smith is a misogynistic a-hole who knows female memebers are being molested and it gets over looked, funny since he thinks porn is evil. Recently 2 FD girls ran from Anchor. Why? Because its not about reform, but brain washing. HBC will never admit to the amount of kids tjat have runaway or been abused, but in FD, it isn’t a very well kept secret.

The fact is Brenda Mustard made report on record…My wife and I own a 2002 Ford F150 dark charcoal 4 door 4×4 Lariat shortbox stepside pickup…Brenda Mustard bought Cody his pickup for christmas in Mitchell South Dakota,,you know what it looks like from the many pictures of it..Tiffany is right there was a report made to SPD about Cody’s pick up being at my house overnight but gone in the morning..Of course my wife P/U was gone in the morning to work…It is strange that the person that was there in Mitchell giving Cody the pickup three days before he goes missing calls into the police a truck she knows is not his …The comment she made it true only to the point that someone called. thank you very much this was a great article hope there will be more
