The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee used a 23-3 run, that included a 17-0 run in the second half to surge past the University of Northern Iowa men’s basketball team on Tuesday in Milwaukee, Wis., 83-72.

UNI led 38-31 at the break. The Panthers then extended the lead to 42-31 just under a minute into the second half on a pair of buckets from junior forward Seth Tuttle. However, Milwaukee flipped the momentum of the game with a 23-3 run to take a 54-45 lead with 11:47 remaining in the game.

“When you have a double-figure lead you need to hang on to it,” UNI head coach Ben Jacobson said. “We got the double-digit lead but we didn’t keep it very long. From the 15-minute mark to the 10-minute mark, Milwaukee turned the momentum of the game. For 25 minutes we played pretty good basketball. But we didn’t match Milwaukee’s effort in the stretch in the second half.”

UNI was led in scoring by junior guard Deon Mitchell with 19 points. Sophomore guard Wes Washpun scored a career-high 16 points off the bench.

UNI will take on Iowa State on Saturday in Des Moines at the Hy-Vee Big Four Classic. Tip is set for 5 p.m. in Wells Fargo Arena.
