IOWA CITY – The Iowa basketball team got a signature win Tuesday in beating Notre Dame in the Big Ten – ACC challenge, 98-93 at Carver Hawkeye Arena.
Five Hawkeyes scored in double figures, including Aaron White (20), Roy Marble (17), Jared Uthoff (17), Mike Gesell (10), and Zach McCabe (10). Aaron White surpassed the 1,000 point mark. He is the 41st player to do so. He now has 1,001 points in his career.
Thirteen of Marble’s 17 points came in the second half of a tight game that saw several lead changes.
“Dev’s run was the difference in the game. We had worked really hard to get a lead. This is a very experienced, incredibly well coached team,” Iowa coach Fran McCaffery said. “You’re playing a team that has an air about them that they expect to win. They play with confidence. They don’t beat themselves.”
Iowa has scored 82 points or more in 8-of-9 games this season. Iowa’s 98 points scored against Notre Dame are the 5th-most in the Fran McCaffery era.
“I’m really impressed with Iowa… they made big plays and made big free throws down the stretch… they are a heck of a team,” Notre Dame coach Mike Brey said after the game.
The game was a high-scoring affair, and McCaffery said the defensive effort was there for both teams, even if it didn’t appear to be.
“I mean, I don’t think either of us played great defense. I think both teams were really trying. I think both teams were really competing defensively. Both teams were mixing man and zone. Both teams have drivers and shooters.”
Iowa improves to 9-1 on the season and resumes play on December 7th in Des Moines against Drake.
