AMES, Iowa – Iowa State rallied from a 31-7 deficit to force overtime and Grant Rohach hit Justin Coleman for the game-winner on the first play of the third overtime, as the Cyclones beat West Virginia, 52-44, in the final game of the season for both teams. With the win, Iowa State finishes the season 3-9 overall and 2-7 in the Big 12. West Virginia falls to 4-8 overall and 2-7 in league play.
The Cyclones trailed 31-14 entering the fourth quarter. The 17-point deficit comeback victory matches the largest-ever in school history.
The Cyclones had a season-high 575 yards of total offense after totaling 502 last week against Kansas. The Cyclones won the final two games of the regular season for the first time since 2000.
With Iowa State trailing 38-21 with under 13 minutes left, Kirby Van Der Kamp ran a fake punt 21 yards to convert on 4th and 17 from the ISU 21. The Cyclones completed the drive with a 62-yard strike from Rohach to Quenton Bundrage to trim the lead to 38-28.
The Cyclones wound up scoring a season-high 24 points in the quarter to force overtime. Rohach’s 19-yard TD pass to Coleman with 1:00 left tied the score for the first time in the game.
