Iowa’s Weisman on Maxwell Award Watch List

logo_iowa_hawkeyesIOWA CITY – University of Iowa junior running back Mark Weisman is one of 12 players in the nation to be added to the Watch List for the 2013 Maxwell Award. The announcement was made by the Maxwell Football Club Wednesday. Semifinal candidates will be announced Tuesday, Oct. 29.

Weisman (6-0, 236) is a native of Buffalo Grove, Ill. (Stevenson HS), who leads Iowa with 624 rushing yards and three touchdowns on 126 carries through six games. He leads the Big Ten Conference and ranks fourth in the nation in rushing attempts, while ranking third in the conference and 24th in the nation in rushing yards per game (104.0).

Weisman has rushed for over 100 yards in four games this season and eight times in his career. His season best of 180 yards came in a win over Missouri State, while he had 147 yards and 145 yards in road wins over Minnesota and Iowa State, respectively. Iowa ranks seventh in the nation in time of possession (33:40), thanks in part to a solid ground game that gained over 200 rushing yards in the first five games of the season.

Weisman led the Hawkeyes in rushing a year ago, carrying the ball 159 times for 815 yards and eight touchdowns, while playing in 10 games and missing two contests due to injury. Weisman ranks 25th in school history in career rushing yards (1,439) and 27th in attempts (285).

Earlier this season, Weisman was named to the Doak Walker Award preseason Watch List and the College Football Performance Awards Running Back Trophy Watch List.

Iowa (4-2, 1-1) is idle this weekend and resumes play Saturday, Oct. 19 at Ohio State (2:30 p.m. CT, ABC/ESPN). The Hawkeyes return home to host Northwestern Saturday, Oct. 26 (TBA).
