Wrestling: Cyclones Crack Top-10 In WIN Preseason TPI Poll

logo_iowa_state_cyclonesAMES, Iowa – WIN Magazine released its preseason Torunament Power Index (TPI) rankings recently, pitting head coach Kevin Jackson and his 2013-14 Cyclones at No. 9 with 35.5 TPI points.

WIN’s point system for the poll is based off potential NCAA All-Americans next March, awarding advancement points for wrestlers ranked No. 9-20. WIN combines both current results with past performance and proven records of consistency to determine who will most likely place high at the NCAA Championships.

WIN also released its 2013-14 preseason individual rankings. Five Cyclones cracked the top-20 at their respective weights, with two familiar names from last season slotted in the top-three. 2013 All-American Michael Moreno, who finished the season 31-10, is slotted No. 3 behind David Taylor (Penn State) and Tyler Caldwell (Oklahoma State) at 165 pounds. Fellow 2013 All-American Kyven Gadson is listed No. 3 at 197 pounds behind Taylor Meeks (Oregon State) and Scott Schiller (Minnesota).

Senior Boaz Beard cracked the top-10 at 184 pounds, as he’s listed No. 8 at 184 pounds. The Whicita, Kan. native, went 17-9 last season and 2-2 at the NCAA Championships. Sophomore Tanner Weatherman is ranked No. 10 at 174 pounds. The Huxley, Iowa native fell just of All-America honors last season, as he was eliminated in the round of 12 at the NCAA Championships. Junior Luke Goettl is ranked No. 18 at 141 pounds. Last season, Goettl went 15-13 and qualified for his second straight NCAA tournament.

The preseason individual rankings are subject to change once teams determine which weight student-athletes will be wrestling at. The individual rankings do not include freshmen right now.
