NIACC sports update

What’s next: The NIACC volleyball team returns to action Wednesday in an ICCAC match at DMACC (15-7 overall, 4-1 in the ICCAC). The Lady Trojans host their own tournament starting at 9 a.m. on Saturday.

Last time out: NIACC (11-11 overall, 1-5 in the league) dropped a 3-0 decision to Marshalltown Community College last Thursday in the NIACC gym. Sophomore Melissa Bisbee (Stacyville, Ia.) led NIACC with seven kills and freshman Jessica Balek (Manly, Ia.) had six kills.

Leading the way: Balek leads NIACC with 171 kills. Sophomore Lexy Nodtvedt (Manly, Ia.) is next in line with 128 kills. Freshman Caitlyn Hanig (Sheffield, Ia.) has 125 kills and Bisbee has 112 kills.

Among the leaders: Sophomore LaShae Brooks (Nett Lake, Minn.) is third in the ICCAC with an average of 1.28 blocks per set … Freshman Carly Ouverson (Fertile, Ia.) is fourth in the league with an average of 0.44 ace serves per set … Freshman Hallie Erdahl (Lake Mills, Ia.) ranks 11th in the league with an average of 4.2 assists per set … Balek ranks 11th in the league with 171 kills.

 

CROSS COUNTRY

What’s next: The NIACC men and women return to action Oct. 12 at the St. Ambrose Fighting Bee Invitational in Bettendorf.

Last time out: The No. 17 NIACC men placed 29th Saturday in the Maroon Division II race at the Roy Griak Invitational in Minneapolis. The Trojans were led by freshman Jaime Zarate (Cedar Falls, Ia.) with an 86th place finish in 26:54. Sophomore Mason Powers (Gilbert, Ia.) was 104th (27:06).

The No. 23 NIACC women placed 30th in the Maroon Division II race.

The Lady Trojans were led by freshman Hannah Palmeter (Bessemer, Mich.) with a 106th place finish. Sophomore Lindsay Brunson (Muscatine, Ia.) was 234th in 26:47.

 

SOCCER

What’s next: NIACC (2-6 overall, 1-4 in the ICCAC) returns to action Tuesday at Scott Community College (3-6, 2-2) in Bettendorf, Ia. Match time is set for 4 p.m.

Last time out: NIACC picked up a 5-3 ICCAC win over Indian Hills on Saturday. The Trojans received a pair of goals from sophomore Tim Roberts (Sydney, Australia) and freshman Matthew Stewart (Lake Worth, Fla).

Sharing the wealth: Four NIACC players have two goals this season. They are sophomore Leo Driscoll (Huddersfield, UK), sophomore Nako Omot (Des Moines, Ia.), sophomore Tim Roberts (Sydney, Australia) and freshman Matt Stewart (Lake Worth, Fla.).

 

GOLF

What’s next: NIACC wraps up its fall season Sunday and Monday at the Eagle Golf Classic in Cedar Rapids.

Last time out: The NIACC men’s golf team placed fifth at the Midwest Elite Golf Tournament at the House of the Rock Golf Resort in Spring Green, Wis. on Friday. Sophomore Levi Fink (Wadena, Ia.) led the Trojans with a 75. Kevin Trobaugh (Gladbrook, Ia.) shot a 79 and Hunter Miller (Jesup, Ia.) shot an 80.

Team leaders: Fink has a stroke average of 75 in seven 18-hole rounds this fall, including a low round of 71. Trobaugh’s 18-hole average for seven rounds is 78.3 with a low round of 73.

 

 

MEN’S BASKETBALL

What’s next: The NIACC men’s basketball team plays in the 2013 Juco Jam Saturday on the University of Northern Iowa campus in Cedar Falls, Ia.

The NIACC men play Anoka-Ramsey at noon in the UNI Wellness and Recreation Center. The Trojans also play Quakerdale Promise Academy at 2 p.m. and Black Hawk College (Illinois) at 4 p.m.

NIACC was 19-12 a year ago and returns five sophomores from last year’s team, including first-team all-American David Humphries (Adelaide, Australia).

 

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

What’s next: The NIACC women’s basketball team plays in the Heartland Jamboree Sunday in Overland Park, Kan.

The NIACC women play Coffeyville Community College at 9:25 a.m. The Lady Trojans also play Independence Community College at 12:10 p.m. and Cowley Community College at 2:55 p.m.

The NIACC women were 18-13 a year ago and return 10 sophomores from last year’s team, including first-team all-region performers Chelsey Jacox (Plymouth, Minn.) and Lateeka Thompson (Burnsville, Minn.)
