Customs and Border Protection Officers stop alleged attempt to smuggle young girl

Brownsville, Texas – U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers at the Brownsville and Matamoros International Bridge on Tuesday intercepted a woman for alleged violations of immigration law. The United States citizen allegedly attempted to facilitate the entry of a young girl into the United States without valid entry documents.

“This is the second case of an alleged smuggling attempt of a girl dressed to look as a boy in the past few days at the Brownsville Port of Entry. Our frontline CBP officers remain alert as they help to prevent these types of smuggling attempts from happening. Keeping children safe is always a priority for the men and women working at our country’s borders,” said Michael Freeman, CBP port director, Brownsville.

On Tuesday, September 24, at the Brownsville and Matamoros International Bridge a 37-year-old female United States citizen who resides in Brownsville, Texas and four minor children applied for admission to enter the United States. The driver presented U.S. birth certificates for the minor children as their entry documents. A CBP officer’s primary inspection resulted in all the vehicle’s occupants being referred to CBP secondary for further inspection and review of entry documents presented. In passport control secondary, CBP officers reviewed the birth certificates presented by the adult for the minor children. CBP officers determined that one of the children dressed as a boy is in fact a girl with no legal documents to enter or reside in the United States.

CBP officers took the adult into custody for alleged violations of immigration law. Three of the children were released to family members. The fourth child, identified as a seven-year-old citizen of Mexico, was processed as an unaccompanied alien child and will be placed in the care of U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Office of Refugee Resettlement.
