Harkin Announces Nearly $680,000 in Rural Economic Development Funding for Iowa

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Senator Tom Harkin (D-IA) today announced that a total of $678,900 will be coming to Iowa from the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) Rural Development Grant Program for rural development projects across the state. Harkin is a senior member of the Senate Committee on Agriculture, Nutrition, and Forestry and the Appropriations subcommittee that funds these initiatives.

“Rural development grants provide our communities with the funding necessary to meet vital needs,” said Harkin. “With this funding, Iowa cities and local hospitals will be able to improve and strengthen infrastructure to make our small towns safe and prosperous. I am pleased that the USDA continues to invest in Iowa and I congratulate each recipient.”

Details of the funding are as follows:

The City of Albia – $50,000 to purchase a quick attack brush truck for the fire department. The truck will be equipped with a 300 gallon tank, pump, and hose reel.

The City of Blockton – $50,000 to purchase a replacement ambulance and related equipment to provide emergency medical services to the City and surrounding areas.

The City of Chariton – $30,000 to purchase a fire attack truck for fire protection in the City and surrounding rural areas. The truck will be outfitted with a water tank and related hoses and pumps.

The City of Collins – $188,800 grant and a $41,200 grant to replace the existing fire station.

Community Hospitals, Inc. – $47,700 to purchase a mobile automated medication dispensing cabinet to be used in providing medical services to patients at Community Hospital.

The City of Corwith – $50,000 to build a new five bay fire station to meet the needs of the fire department.

Davis County Hospital – $46,900 to purchase an ambulance for emergency responses in Davis County.

The City of Eldora – $50,000 to purchase a new ambulance to serve the City and surrounding rural areas.

The City of Hastings – $50,000 to purchase a replacement fire truck and related equipment used in providing emergency services for the City and surrounding areas.

Humboldt County Memorial Hospital – $27,700 to purchase a new ambulance to be used in the City of Humboldt and the surrounding area.

The City of Humeston – $48,700 to purchase a used replacement tanker/pumper truck to serve the City and surrounding rural areas. Additional equipment for the truck will also be purchased.

The City of Van Wert – $9,100 to purchase a warning siren and related equipment to protect the citizens of Van Wert.

Wayne County Hospital – $30,000 to purchase a 3-D ultrasound machine and upgraded viewing station. The new equipment will allow for greater detail and clarity of images, less discomfort for the patient, digital manipulation of the image and better precision and focus.
