CBP Officers Arrest Internal Methamphetamine Carrier, Seize Narcotics Hidden in Gas Tank

Imperial Valley, Calif. — U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers working at the Imperial Valley ports of entry Wednesday discovered more than $645,000 worth of methamphetamine hidden inside a gas tank, and almost $10,000 worth of methamphetamine concealed within the body cavity of a pedestrian border crosser.

The first incident occurred September 4th, at about 9:45 a.m., when officers working at the Calexico downtown port encountered a 23-year-old male U.S. citizen driving a 2002 Jeep Liberty SUV that had been referred for a more in-depth inspection.

During an intensive examination, a CBP canine team received an alert from their detector dog, leading officers to the discovery of 30 vacuum-sealed packages of methamphetamine hidden inside the gas tank of the vehicle. The narcotics weighed approximately 34 pounds.

Later in the day, at about 6:00 p.m., CBP officers working at the Andrade port of entry referred a 51-year-old female U.S. citizen for additional inspection after she entered the port from Mexico on foot.

During the inspection, officers suspected that the woman could possibly be an internal carrier and transported her to a local hospital for a medical evaluation.

A half-pound of methamphetamine was discovered, with a street value of almost $10,000.

The male driver, a resident of Mexicali, Baja California, and female, a resident of Winterhaven, California, were turned over to the custody of Homeland Security Investigation (HSI) agents for further processing. Both subjects were transported to the Imperial County Jail to await arraignment.

CBP seized the vehicle and the narcotics.
