North Iowa Area Community College offers classes at the College’s area Education Centers and local communities. Whether you’re interested in pursuing a degree, upgrading your skills, or taking a few classes just for fun, NIACC community education programs bring the opportunities to your doorstep. The following classes are being offered and are grouped by city; please note classes are open to anyone, no matter which community you live in. Belmond

  • A course titled Oil Painting will be offered on Thursdays, September 5-September 26 from 6:00-8:00 p.m. at the Belmond High School. Learn oil painting techniques. You will paint from a still life arrangement. Oil paint is a forgiving art form, so it’s easy to learn. Supply fee of $12 to cover canvas, brushes & paint payable to instructor at the first class.   • A course titled Energize for Life will be offered on Monday, September 16 from 6:30-8:00 p.m.at the Belmond Library. Are you exhausted and stressed out?   • A course titled Introduction to iPad will be offered on Tuesday, October 1 from 5:30-8:00 p.m.at the Belmond Library.   • A course titled Canoe the Iowa River will be offered on Saturday, October 5 from 11:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. at the Belmond River Park. Entry-level canoe skills are taught. Skilled canoers are welcome to enjoy a leisurely ride down the Iowa River to see wildlife & savanna oaks. Students 12 yrs. & younger must be accompanied by an adult. Britt

  • Weight Lifting for Seniors course will be offered on Tuesdays, September 10-September 24from 5:30-6:30 p.m. at the Hancock County Health System in Britt. Research based information on safe, sensible & effective strength training, specifically for the over 50 exercisers.  Suggestions for weights will be given in the first session.   • A course titled Homemade Cosmetics and Products will be offered on Monday, September 16 from 6:30-8:30 p.m. at the West Hancock High School Family and Consumer Science Room. Learn to make homemade lotion, deodorant, & laundry detergent from certified organic products.  $12 fee will be paid to instructor for materials & containers.  You will take home a minimum of 4 products.   • A student led DVD series titled The American Mind will begin on Tuesday, September 10 and continue on Tuesdays until October 15 from 5:00-6:00 p.m. at the Charles City Center. You will choose from 36 (30 minute) lectures, philosophical and intellectual history, Puritans through Moral Philosophers. There is no charge for this class but registration is required.   • A class titled Digital Photography –Beginners 1: Point and Shoot Cameras will be offered onThursday, September 12 from 5:30 – 8:30 p.m. at the Charles City NIACC Center taught by Dee Schweizer. Topics will include basic camera settings and formats, explanation of terms, discovering your camera’s scene modes, tips for composing better pictures, some hands-on practice and time for questions. Tuition for this course is $25 and the course number is 89083, please have number ready when registering. Bring a camera with a memory card and charged battery.

 

  • A class titled Everyday Yoga and Feng Shui will be offered on Saturday, September 14 from 9:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. at the Charles City NIACC Center taught by Barb Eisenmenger. This workshop will take you from where you are and widen your horizons to look at your life through new eyes. Yoga will help you relieve stress, be mindful, and get a little swing in your body. Yoga, Feng Sui and healthful eating are the focus of this Saturday morning event. Tuition for this course is $19 and the course number is 89081, please have number ready when registering.   • A class titled Dog Obedience Training – Puppies will begin on Wednesday, September 18 and continue on Wednesdays until October 30.  This class will be held from 5:30 – 6:15 p.m. at the Charles City Center and is taught by Teri Turner. This 7 week program promotes good manners and socialization for you and your puppy. Puppies must be 8-16 weeks at first class. The first class is an orientation at 6:30, no dogs.   • A class titled Dog Obedience Training – Basic will begin on Wednesday, September 18 and continue on Wednesdays until October 30.  This class will be held from 6:30 – 7:15 p.m. at the Charles City Center and is taught by Teri Turner. Use positive reinforcement to teach your dog basic obedience; this program helps your dog become an enjoyable member of the family. The first class is an orientation at 6:30, no dogs. You must be at least 13 years old to enroll.

 

  • A class titled Dog Obedience Training – Advanced will begin on Wednesday, September 18 and continue on Wednesdays until October 30.  This class will be held from 7:30 – 8:15 p.m. at the Charles City Center and is taught by Teri Turner. This class will focus on more advanced work on basic obedience with an introduction to off leash work. The first class is an orientation at6:30, no dogs.   • A class titled Digital Photography –Beginners 2: Point and Shoot Cameras will be offered onThursday, September 26 from 5:30 – 8:30 p.m. at the Charles City NIACC Center taught by Dee Schweizer. Become more comfortable and dig a little deeper into your camera’s scene modes by practicing in class with hands-on assistance. Practice will include lighting, portraiture, white balance, and macro/still life. Tuition for this course is $25 and the course number is 89084, please have number ready when registering.   • A class titled Your Money/Your Future iWork$hop will be offered on Monday, September 30 and continue on Monday, October 28 from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. at the Charles City NIACC Center with Instructor Brenda Schmitt. Learn to use your technology to manage money easily. Bring your laptop or tablet and Income/Expense information as well as your financial records for the last 1-2 months. Students will learn how to use an Excel spreadsheet in Google Documents and also learn about Credit/Credit Reports and other resources. Clear Lake

  • A course titled Beginning Latin Dance will be offered from on Tuesdays, September 10-October 22 from 7:00-9:00 p.m. at the Surf Ballroom. Learn one of the most popular dance trends, Latin, with teachers Clyde & Kathy Janssen. Rumba, Cha’Cha’, & Tango will be taught. Register with a partner. Crystal Lake

  • A course titled Friendship Quilt will be offered on Monday, September 30 from 6:00-9:00 pm at the Crystal Lake Library. Friendship quilts are a mini-barn quilt. It’s made of wood and perfect to hang outside.   Design, paint & complete the 2 ft. x 2 ft. project in one evening.  Additional $29 supply fee, payable to the instructor, which includes a primed board, paint, tape & patterns.  You will need to bring a few items.  Tuition is $12 and the course number is 89135, please have ready when you register.   • Beginning Knitting course will be offered on Mondays, October 7-October 18 from 6:30-8:30 p.m. at the Crystal Lake Senior Center. Learn Basic knitting stitches in this beginner level class or brush up on your knitting skills. A project will be completed during the class: decorative garter stitch scarf or kitting dish cloths. Garner

  • A Yoga Class will be offered on Tuesdays, September 10 – October 8, from 6:00 pm – 7:00 pmat the Garner Education Center. Give Yoga a try!  This is a gentle, restorative yoga class to stretch & relax your muscles and support your health.  The class works toward flexibility, strength & stress reduction.  Bring a yoga mat or large towel & water.  Wear non-restrictive clothes.   • A Medicare Seminar will be offered on Thursday, September 12 from 6:00-8:00 p.m. at the Garner Education Center. Welcome to Medicare will cover Medicare Parts A & B benefits, prescription drug benefits (Part D), Medicare Advantage plans & Medicare supplement insurance.   • A course titled A Bushel of Goodies will be offered on Wednesday, September 25 and October 2 from 5:30-8:00 pm at the Garner High School Family and Consumer Science Room. Learn to preserve apples by making canned pie filling which can be used in a pie or in a variety of other recipes.  Week one participants will go home with 2 qts. of canned apples.  Week 2 you will lean to make a double crusted apple pie to take home & bake.  Registration due by September 18.  Tuition is $25 and the course number is 89244, please have number ready when you register.   • A course titled Money, Time and Technology  will be offered on Thursday, September 26 and October 24 from 6:00-8:00 p.m. at the Garner Education Center. Learn how to make your choice of technology work for you while creating a spending plan as well as tracking income & expenses.  Bring your ipad, tablet, or laptop and 1 to 3 months of income & expenses.  Limited to 12 to allow privacy.  Credit & credit reports will also be discussed.   • A course titled Cake Decorating: Beyond Basics will be offered on Thursdays, October 3 – October 24 from 6:30-8:30 p.m. in the Garner High School Family and Consumer Science Room. Make your cakes look professional with the addition of flowers & cake designs.  You will learn to make roses, apple blossoms, daisies, violets & other blossoms.  Learn how to make impressive border treatments & basket weave designs.  This is an intermediate level class.   • Knitting for Beginners course will be held on Mondays, October 7-October 28 from 6:30-8:30 p.m. at the Garner Education Center. Participants will learn or brush up on the basics of knitting:  knit & purl stitches & reading patterns.  You will complete 2 projects.  Bring size 5 knitting needles & 1 ball of cotton yarn. Hampton

 

  • A course titled Lunch and Learn: Facebook for Business II will be offered on Thursday, September 12 from 11:30 a.m.-1:00 p.m. at Hampton Center 1. Bring laptop or tablet for a hands on workshop.  You will learn tactics like creating your own Facebook contest, designing your own cover page, scheduling content & creating your own flyer to promote an event.   • A course titled Intro to Canoeing and Kayaking  will be offered on Saturday, September 14 from 10:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. at Maynes Grove in Hampton. Introduction to basic canoeing and kayaking, day will begin with a half hour of instruction & then go to Popejoy Park & canoe to Alden.  Must be 8 yrs. & older & if under 18 accompanied by an adult.  Bring snacks & water (plastic container).  Wear sturdy shoes.   • Discovery Hike will take place on Saturday, September 21 from 4:00-8:00 p.m. at Maynes Grove in Hampton. Enjoy the fall scenery of Maynes Grove through a nature hike.  Discover habitats & effects of prescribed fire on the landscape.  End the day with a campfire & smores.  All ages welcome but youth under 16 must be accompanied by an adult.   • A course titled Lunch and Learn: Basic Maintenance for Your PC will be offered on Thursday, October 3 from 11:30 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. at Hampton Center 1. Keep your computer running efficiently & as bug-free as possible.  You will learn how to do Windows Updates, install & run various clean-up programs, what antivirus program may be the best for you plus other tips & tricks. Lake Mills

  • Beginning Quilting class will be offered on Mondays, September 9- September 30 from 6:30-8:30 p.m. at the Lake Mills Education Center. The class is for a beginner quilter or anyone who wants to brush up on quilting skills.  Learn how to cut, piece, layer, quilt & bind a quilt.  Several blocks will be made which can be used to make a wall hanging or small lap quilt.  Fabric must be purchased in class.  $20 supply fee payable to instructor at first class.  Supply list sent after registration deadline.   • A course titled Advanced Hardanger will be offered on Mondays, September 9-October 28 from7:00 – 9:00 p.m. at Mills Harbour in Lake Mills. Advanced Hardanger is for those that have knowledge of basic Hardanger stitches. Students will learn lace edging and other fancier stitches.   • A course titled Screen Print Tote Bag will be offered on Wednesday, September 11 from 6:30-9:30 p.m. at the Joice Bethany Lutheran Church. Make a light weight medium sized tote bag using pet screen with six outside pockets.  Must be able to do basic sewing.  Bring sewing machine with black thread, scissors, 12” ruler & pins.  $20 supply fee paid to instructor in class.   • A course titled Investment Basics will be offered on Mondays, September 16-September 30from 6:30-8:00 p.m. at the NIACC John Pappajohn Center in Room 117. Class will explain investment basics & income generation in a low interest rate environment.  Participants will become familiar with the different types of investments; risks associated with investing, importance of constructing an efficient portfolio & how to us a portfolio to minimize risk & maximize return.   • On Monday, September 9 and 16, a class titled Grant Writing with Passion will be offered from5:30 – 8:00 p.m. at the Osage Library. Tamerah McCready’s introductory course covers an overview of the planning and proposal process. Perfect for volunteers, board members, or other interested persons who are passionate about helping a non-profit group/organization.   • On Tuesdays and Thursdays, September 10- September 26, a class titled We’re Walking! will be offered from 12:00-1:00 p.m. at the City Park in Osage. In case of bad weather, meet at the Cedar River Complex (CRC). Join fitness enthusiast Bridget Klapperich for an invigorating walk. Meet up with friends and enjoy the fresh air and get your blood flowing. Wear comfortable walking shoes and clothing.   • A class titled Watercolor Painting : Trees will be offered on Friday, September 20 from 5:30-8:30 p.m. and Saturday, September 21, from 9:00 a.m.-2:00 p.m. at the Osage Middle School Art Room. Adults at any stage of their painting journeys will benefit from Nancy Scherer’s expertise with watercolor painting. Paint a variety of techniques and tree settings. Bring 140# watercolor paper, colored pencils, eraser, paper towels, water container and brushes/paints you have to class.   • On Monday, September 23, a class titled Beaded Spider will be offered from 6:00-8:00 p.m. at the Osage Public Library. You pick the beads and colors to create a whole new web of “adorable” friends that don’t bite. These can be as spooky or glitzy as the mind can create. Great family fun, children 12 and up welcome with a parent. Tuition for this class is $9 and there will be a $3 charge per kit.   • On Tuesday, October 1, a class titled Your Body’s Energy System will be offered from 6:00-8:30 p.m. at the Osage Library. Most aspects of the “life force” within us are a mystery to us. Learn what quantum physics has discovered about energy and the physical body and how you can utilize this knowledge to enhance your wellness using your own energy system.
