Afghan commandos detain 3 insurgents, discover weapons cache in Wardak

WARDAK PROVINCE, Afghanistan- Afghan commandos from the 6th Special Operations Kandak partnered with the Afghan National Army’s 203rd Corps for a clearing operation Aug. 30 in Nerkh district, where they detained three insurgents and found a weapons stockpile.

The combined force spotted three suspected insurgents flee during a patrol in Deh Muslim village. Afghan forces quickly reacted and were able to detain the suspects. They also found more than 90 assorted mortars and artillery munitions.

Afghan commandos are an elite group who conducts high-risk operations in areas known to be enemy strongholds. These counterinsurgency missions assist national and local police in their efforts to increase security, governance and development.

The detainees were taken into custody by the 203rd Corps soldiers for processing and further questioning.

“There is still a heavy enemy presence in this region,” said Brig. Gen. Karim, Afghan National Army Special Operations Command commander. “As Commandos, we are more than willing to go into the district and clear the area of the enemy.”

Afghan National Security Forces have irreversibly taken the lead for Afghanistan’s security, underscoring the Government of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan’s Tranche 5, Milestone 2013 announcement this summer.

No civilians were injured, and there were no reports of structural damages during this operation.
