UNI MBB Announces Non-Conference Schedule

logo_uni_panthersCEDAR FALLS, Iowa – The University of Northern Iowa men’s basketball team will feature a 15-game home schedule for the 2013-14 season, including a national ESPNU broadcast vs. VCU on Dec. 14.

UNI will host a pair of exhibition contests on Oct. 25 vs. Bemidji State and Nov. 1 vs. Dubuque.

To open the regular season, the Panthers will travel to Athens, Ohio, to take on the Ohio Bobcats on Nov. 9.

UNI will take on Coe College in the McLeod Center on Nov. 11 to open the home portion of the regular season docket.

The Panthers will hit the road for their next six games. The road trip will embark with a game at George Mason on Nov. 16. Last season, UNI posted an 82-77 overtime win at George Mason. The victory snapped GMU’s 14-game home-court winning streak, which was the ninth-best active streak at the time.

The Panthers will then travel to the U.S. Virgin Islands to take part in the 2013 Paradise Jam. UNI will matchup against Loyola Marymount in the first round game on Nov. 22. UNI will then take on either Marist or Maryland in its second-round game. The other four teams competing in the Paradise Jam are Providence, Vanderbilt, Morgan State and LaSalle.

UNI will return to the mainland for a road game at Milwaukee on Dec. 3. The UNI-Milwaukee matchup will conclude a four-year contract between the two schools that featured a pair of home games for each team.

The Panthers will meet up with Iowa State on Dec. 7 in the Hy-Vee Big Four Classic at Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines.

UNI will play host to Savannah State on Dec. 10 in the McLeod Center. UNI and Savannah State have never met in men’s basketball.

Dec. 14 features the ESPNU contest between the VCU Rams and Panthers. That game will feature two of the 11 programs in the nation that have won a postseason game in each of the last four seasons (Butler, BYU, Creighton, Gonzaga, Kansas, North Carolina, Northern Iowa, Ohio State, Purdue, Syracuse and VCU).

The Panthers will travel to Charlottesville, Va., to square off against the Virginia Cavaliers on Dec. 21.

UNI will wrap up its non-conference play on Dec. 28 when the Panthers host the Iona Gaels in the McLeod Center.

The Missouri Valley Conference schedule will be released by the league office at a later date.
