Sioux City woman convicted for role in robbery conspiracy

SIOUX CITY – A Sioux City woman was convicted by a jury on June 19, 2013, after a 3-day trial in federal court in Sioux City.

Paige Mathison, age 21, from Sioux City, was convicted of conspiracy to commit robbery interfering with commerce; aiding and abetting a robbery interfering with commerce; possession of a firearm in furtherance of a robbery interfering with commerce; and possession of an unregistered firearm. The verdict was returned following about 4 hours of jury deliberations.

The evidence presented at trial revealed Mathison knew David Johnson, Joshua Fields, Christopher Bailey, Terrence Miles, Austin Peters and others robbed the Seoul Foods in South Sioux, City, Nebraska on June 19, 2012, and that – after this – Johnson, Fields, and Bailey had a “hit list” of businesses they were considering robbing. On July 13, 2012, Mathison drove these men around Sioux City, Iowa – with a sawed-off shotgun – scouting “licks” (i.e., businesses they might rob) and discussing how to conduct the robbery until Johnson, Fields, and Bailey actually robbed Sarg’s Mini Mart using a sawed-off shotgun. Mathison served as the getaway driver for the crime. Mathison had earlier acquired the unregistered sawed-off shotgun used in the crime. She returned the firearm to her brother, Dustin Mathison, after the robbery.

The men involved in the robbery of Seoul and/or Sarg’s have all pleaded guilty. David Johnson (who was involved in both robberies) plead guilty on January 14, 2013; Rudy Johnson plead guilty on February 20, 2013, Joshua Fields (who was involved in both robberies) plead guilty on February 26, 2013, Terrence Miles and Austin Peters both plead guilty on March 26, 2013, Christopher Bailey (who was involved in both robberies) plead guilty on March 29, 2013. On May 2, 2013, Dustin Mathison plead guilty to possessing the sawed-off shotgun used in the robbery of Sarg’s.

Sentencing before United States District Court Judge Mark W. Bennett for David Johnson, Christopher Bailey, Joshua Fields, Rudy Johnson, Terrence Miles, and Dustin Peters has been set for August 15, 2013, and sentencing for Paige Mathison will be set after a presentence report is prepared. Dustin Mathison was sentenced on May 30, 2013, to 60 months’ imprisonment. Mathison remains in custody of the United States Marshal pending sentencing.

On the conspiracy to commit robbery charge, Mathison faces a possible maximum sentence of 20 years’ imprisonment, a $250,000 fine, a $100 special assessment, and three years of supervised release following any imprisonment. On the substantive robbery charge Mathison faces a possible maximum sentence of 20 years’ imprisonment, a $250,000 fine, a $100 special assessment, and three years of supervised release following any imprisonment. On the possession of an unregistered firearm charge, Mathison faces 10 years’ imprisonment, a $250,000 fine, a $100 special assessment, and three years of supervised release following any imprisonment. On the charge of possession of a sawed-off shotgun in furtherance of a crime of violence, Mathison faces a mandatory minimum sentence of 10 years up to life imprisonment without the possibility of parole, a $250,000 fine, a $100 special assessment, and three years of supervised release following any imprisonment which must be served consecutive to any other sentence.
