Tornadoes strike Oklahoma, Arkansas

PERKINS, Okla., May 30 (UPI) — Tornadoes struck in Oklahoma and Arkansas Thursday, causing at least one injury, property damage, downed power lines and downed trees, authorities said.

The National Weather Service said tornadoes touched down near Perkins and Ripley, Okla. One person was reported injured when a tornado struck western Arkansas as a storm system moved through the region, CBS News reported.

Tommy Jackson, a spokesman for Arkansas Emergency Management, said downed trees blocked roads, making it difficult for first responders to get to a home destroyed by the storm.

Perkins Emergency Management Director Travis Majors said there had been no reports of injuries or damage, and CBS said there was no evidence of significant damage in Ripley, about 10 miles from Perkins.

Storms accompanied by 70 mph winds left about 3,500 people without power in Dallas County, Texas, Wednesday evening. The storms brought down power lines and trees, and blew away sections of a new Hurricane Harbor water ride in Arlington, The Dallas Morning News reported.

Quarter-sized hail was reported in Dallas and Denton counties.

A massive house fire was reported in Lantana due to the storm, the newspaper said. The second story of the house was destroyed. There was no report of injuries.

The storm prompted the cancellation of Wednesday’s scheduled game between the Texas Rangers and the Arizona Diamondbacks baseball game in Arlington.

Flights out of Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport were delayed because of lightning in the area, the airport said.

About 19 tornadoes were reported in Texas, Kansas, Nebraska, and Iowa on Wednesday, weather.com said.

In southwestern Wisconsin, at least one tornado and severe storms late Wednesday caused property damage and power outages, WISC-TV, Madison, Wis., reported.

“We’ve got several trailers on their sides, trees down, electrical lines down,” said Fred White, Bagley fire chief. “We’ve got about half the township without power. That’s what we saw on the survey of the township.”

CBS News meteorologist David Bernard said Thursday at least 75 tornadoes have hit the Great Plains region since Sunday.
