PHOENIX, May 25 (UPI) — A federal judge in Arizona has ruled Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio’s handling of people of Latino descent amounts to racial and ethnic profiling.
Judge Murray Stone, ruling in suits filed by some of the profiled people, banned some of the sheriff’s operation procedures, CNN reported Saturday.
The court said many of Arpaio’s practices violated Fourth Amendment guarantees against unreasonable search and seizure, and 14th Amendment provisions of equal treatment under the law.
In a 142-page ruling, Snow permanently banned the sheriff’s office from detaining or arresting Latinos simply on suspicion they may be in the country illegally, the Los Angeles Times reported.
The judge noted that in four sweeps of day-labor facilities, none of the 35 people arrested was detained for violation of state or local laws.
Tim Casey, an attorney who represented the sheriff’s office, said he was “disappointed in the decision” and promised to appeal the ruling. The position of the sheriff’s office “was and always has been that race is not used to make law enforcement decisions.”
The ruling is “a gift that reminded us that Sheriff Arpaio has to go,” said Lilia Alvarez, organizer of a campaign to recall Arpaio, The Arizona Republic reported.

Maybe in those places that tend to provide them employment – wouldn’t that be a place to start? So a few citizens were upset when their citizenship status was questioned – so what. If the sheriff had a quick way to determine their status detention would not be required, would it.
I would expect ICE, Homeland Security, etc. to make sweeps for Islamic terrorists at mosques – because that is where they tend to congregate, right? Profiling, racial & otherwise, is used by El Al who has quite a good record of identifying those with the potential to do harm – but we are not allowed to use what is no more than common sense. @bodacious-I think you might want to read the article again. It says that no one was found that violated state or local laws. I take that to mean that they violated federal law and then were arrested. You have to live out there to understand how this works. They congregate in area where they work and live and now the cartels are moving in and they are everywhere. It is entirely different than it is here in Iowa.

There is obviously a big disconnect between the judiciary (probably the 7th district in San Francisco) and the electorate.
Sheriff Joe continues to be reelected by huge margins so he must be doing something right – like enforcing the laws. Maybe federal judges should be subject to confirmation votes as Iowa judges are.
I hope I live long enough to see Sheriff Joe up on Mt Rushmoore he deserves it. They will put him up there some day but we got to clean house first maybe I will live to help but not likely. He is a great American oh yes.

Sheriff Joe,is one of the best Sheriff’s in the country.He actually enforces the laws on the books and is willing to do what it takes to do it.The crime here is that Federal Judges refuses to enforce the laws.If these people(illegals) were lily white,they would be throwing them in jail.I am a Sheriff Joe supporter,and I wish that every sheriff would enforce the laws all the laws..
