Girl, 12, grazed by stray bullet in her NYC bedroom

NEW YORK, May 22 (UPI) — A 12-year-old New York girl had a near miss when a bullet ricocheted off a fire escape and came through her bedroom window, police said.

The girl, identified by relatives only as Kamaili, had a graze on her neck, the New York Daily News reported. Doctors at St. Luke’s-Roosevelt Hospital later found fragments of a bullet in her hair.

Kamaili told the News she was sitting on her bed in her family’s sixth-floor apartment in upper Manhattan about 9 p.m. Monday when she heard gunfire in the street and then felt her neck burning. She began screaming and her mother rushed into the room.

The girl remembers being bewildered by what had happened, saying she was asking herself questions: “What enemies do I have? Who could do this to me?”

Her family has now moved her bed farther from the window.

On Saturday, a 14-year-old girl, D’aja Robinson, was shot in the head and killed by a stray bullet as she rode on a bus in Queens after attending a friend’s Sweet 16 party.

Linda Brown, who lives near Kamaili, told the News she fears those shootings are just the beginning.

“The summer is just getting started,” she said. “There are kids hanging out in the streets … . The first crack of warm and they go crazy.”
