Woman charged with murder after missing husband’s body found in closet

MAYS LANDING, N.J., May 18 (UPI) — A New Jersey woman was charged with murder Friday after police found her husband’s body in a closet six years after he supposedly ran off with a girlfriend.

Loretta Burroughs, 61, of Ventnor was held in lieu of $2 million bail after a short court appearance in Atlantic County, The Star-Ledger of Newark reported.

Investigators say Burroughs stabbed her husband in 2007 and concealed his body in their home in Mays Landing. After another family member reported him missing, she said he had driven away with another woman in a car with Florida plates.

Acting Atlantic County Prosecutor James McClain said when Burroughs moved to Ventnor, a shore community south of Atlantic City, she took the body with her. The investigation was reopened in February and McClain said both the Ventnor house and one Burroughs recently purchased in Villas near Cape May were searched.

Caroline Burroughs, Daniel’s daughter by a previous marriage, told WCAU-TV in Philadelphia her stepmother was angry in 2007 because her father wanted to move to Florida. His family never believed Loretta’s story about Daniel’s departure, she said.

The daughter was cynical about Burroughs’ tears during her court appearance: “She’s crying? Was she crying when she stabbed him to death and put him in pieces or whatever she did to him? Has she been crying for six years? No, she’s just sorry she got caught, that’s why she’s crying.”
